 | Key West Tourist Traps | Tips 1 - 10 of 69 | | I know there are a ton of T-shirt shops on Duval Str. My advice is STAY AWAY! I received a T-shirt from Key West in 2002 from my sister in law. It was washed and dried twice and the "silk screening" all but faded away. Cheap Cheap Cheap !!!! The stories about T-shirt shops selling "custom" shirts for $70-100 are true. In fact several of these crooks have been arrested recently. The best way to protect yourself is to just walk away. If they try to rip you off and demand payment for a shirt you didn't order contact the Police. They know the situation and will help you.
Browse around, some of the shirts are funny. Browse only!
Go to K-Mart near Stock Island. cheaper t-shirts, better product. Leave a Comment

T-shirt shops have been found guilty of scamming customers, failing to give written estimates of costs, and telling them how much T-shirts would cost after the work was done. Sometimes they would quote one price for the work and then charge another price at the the register. 37 out of 40 shops were in violation of the codes which are meant to stop these practices and eight of them were found guilty in a special master hearing in February 2004. Those shope are Smile Mon Inc., Smile Mon II, Sun Island, Coconut Island of Key West, Sunset Sport, Inc., Paradise Corner, Sivan of Key West and the Pelican. They were barred from making T-shirts for 10 days and fined $5000.00. The suspensions are being appealed.
I have not been here, but if you don't want to buy from the aggressive T-shirt vendors, I suggest going to the T-Shirt Factory and getting a custom shirt with whatever logo you like done for you. They will charge about $15.00 each 316 Simonton St. 305-292-2060 I have a picture under the Shopping Tips
If you have a car, and are in Key West on the weekend, take a ride up to the Big Pine Flea Market, which is every Saturday and Sunday between 8 and 2. If you don't mind digging through the pile to find your size or color or logos that you like, you can get 4 T-shirts or polo shirts for $10.00 (usually seconds which will often have a star embroidered over the flaw). They also sell food (to eat or to cook), jewelry, socks, sunglasses, and souveniers. Leave a Comment

Should be call Ship Wreck Histboringem. Luckily, we had a buy one, get one free ticket from the Entertainment Book, or I would have really been mad. It is dark, and low budget. The best part is the tower for pictures.
East Martello Museum & Gallery self guided tour was much better. Leave a Comment

Ugly, and not much bang for your buck. Any tour that starts with watching videos is...not that good a start for me. The house is not very charming, guides are good with what they have to work with. If you are a real Harry Truman buff, you will eat it up, but (yawn) time in Key West is much better spent somewhere else.
I would only go here if my child needed it to count for a historical trip for school credit. Leave a Comment

I wouldn't do that here, certainly now the prices are high everywhere. For some strange reason prices of gas in Key Largo are much cheaper as they are in Key West or even in Miami. So when driving in to the Keys fill up your car in Key Largo you should be able to get up and down the Keys with a full tank. But when in doubt if you would make it back it's also a good thing to fill up your car just a little bit. You could also check the most recent prices at this website.

See all those storefronts with racks of tee-shirts along Duval Street and Front Street? Stay away! You'll walk in for a $5.00 tee and end up spending ten times that, thanks to the "2-for-1" offers, high pressure salesmen, and outrageous decal costs. Instead, look for the street vendors along Duval. Usually, the quality will be as good (or better) than the shirts found in the shops. Or I suggest that you buy a souvenier tee from your favorite bar. You won't spend as much, and you'll have a real Key West memory. Leave a Comment

You will see these colorful open air trains snaking their way along Duval Street and contributing to the congestion on the narrow roads. On board, tourists in bright floral print sit and watch the crowd, which is precisely what they would be doing if they were not on board this train. The conch tour train does provide a lot of information on the history of Key West, but most people aren't even listening. It is an overpriced tourist gimmick that doesn't go anywhere most tourists will go on their own. There are so many things to do in Key West and this one is a waste of time.
There are a couple of exceptions to the above. Those who have difficulty walking may prefer to tour Key West in this manner. Also, the trains are supposed to be accessible to wheelchair users so those with mobility impairments may prefer the train to navigating the older and often inaccessible streets of Key West.
Go snorkeling or scuba diving, walk along Duval Street, visit the muiseums and parks, have a drink at Sloppy Joe's, There are far better ways to spend your time. Leave a Comment

What Key West page will be complete without mentioning Sloppy Joe's. I will just do it int the tourist trap section. They are still raking in the bucks on the coat tails of Hemingway. But it is still a good watering hole. Around the corner from here there is a place that claims to be the "ORIGINAL SLOPPY JOE" Ayyiii. If you're lucky, you'll catch a wet T-Shirt contest. Ladies, be ready, it is open to amateurs. But beware, I think some ringers sneak in now and then. You know what I mean. No amateur can look that good.
It is still a good stop, albeit, crowded. Leave a Comment

They've been investigated by the FBI for supplying money to terrorists.. not sure how it turned out.. anyways, they sell ugly t-shirts with filthy messages on them that have nothing to do with Key West... don't buy from them. Maybe if we ignore them they will go away! Leave a Comment

When we lived in Key West the Truman White House was on the Naval Base. I thought it might be nice to see it now that it is open to the public. So we walked over from the Shipwreck Museum (there's no parking inside the gates). We had about 45 minutes on the parking meter.
I realized that the homes that used to be officers quarters for the Navy had been turned into condos etc. Everything is very sanitized in a Disney type way. (This is not a compliment.) I also realized that the tour not only would cost $10.00 each (way too expensive), AND would take more time than we had on the parking meter. I read about the tour. The house had been restored to the 40's styles. I can remember the 40s. I don't need to see 'restored' 'historic' sites that are from the 40s. Historic - NOT . . .
There is a FREE 10 minute video tape extolling all possible virtures of Harry Truman and his life that you can see before the tour. I decided that the video tape was sufficient, and we didn't stay for the tour. Leave a Comment
