OK, if you're here because you Googled "Go Topless", you are now busted. (pun intended) I'm talking about convertibles. If/when you rent a car in Key West, I absolutely suggest that you book ahead and get yourself a convertible. This is the perfect town to cruise around topless, talking to the folks along the street.
And if you get a chance, you might want to motor up the Keys toward mainland Florida along US 1 with the top down, too. It's all part of the lifestyle.
Most of the rental companies have convertible options in Key West...usually you'll get a Chrysler Sebring or PT Cruiser convertible model. There are some BMWs and such, too. But, as you'd guess, they are popular. Book ahead of time, and you'll be paying about $15 a day more. But again, it's Key West. This is no place to be riding around in a hard-top Impala, folks.
Drop the top and let 'er rip!

Rent a car for the Drive from Miami
Because this was not our first time in Key West, we decided to take the long way into the Keys. We flew into Miami, rented a car, and drove the rest of the way, over the long beautiful bridges overlooking the blue ocean. This was a long drive, about 3 hours, but well worth it. When you get to Key West, there is not a whole lot of parking available. If you are going to stay in the Historical area, I would advise parking in a parking structure. We were able to squeeze our car into this little area behind the back fence of the house.
There is a parking garage on Front Street.

We rented a car, then rarely used it. If you stay anywhere around the Old Town areas, you can pretty much walk to everything. If you're dressing up for a dinner and don't want to walk, take a cab...there are plenty...and it will cut down on some of the traffic congestion.

Here is the Buick Regal we rent at Alamo-rent-a-car at Ft Lauderdale.
You simply must have your own transportation. There are too many things to see that you wouldn't if you didn't just 'by chance' run into it or find on your own.
