Taxis, Key West
I had just gotten off the ferry from Fort Myers and asked cab #305 today, April 19th, 2015, for a ride. He never fully stopped to talk to me and kept slowly driving away, but told me he did not know where I wanted to go in a very rude tone (which I did and could have given him directions, which I told him, OR maybe he would have heard me if he had actually stopped) and kept driving. He then stopped and helped the three ladies that were in front of me and asked them in a nice voice if they needed a ride.
Friendly Cab Company? I THINK NOT. I will not be using this cab service ever again and can assure you that my friends and family will not either.
Hello, we recently visited Key West and had called for your taxi service. The first time was to leave the Eco Discovery Center and return to the Best Western Ambassador. After waiting some time, we called again and learned that the taxi went to our destination instead of the Eco Discovery Center. A second cab came to the Eco Discovery Center. We were waiting outside the front of the building and the taxi went past to the back of the building. We ran out to catch the cab and two other men got in the cab. We approached the cab and the driver said "oh, you're the ones that called?" If we hadn't approached, that taxi would have left with other customers knowing that they were not the people who had called for the ride. On the last day of our trip, there was a heavy rain. We were downtown and the water was rising in the streets. We called for a pink taxi again. We waited outside a local shop for at least 45 minutes. A pink taxi was driving by. We waved to let him know it was us. He did nothing but wave back and continued driving. Another pink taxi drove by without stopping. We called again and dispatcher said she'd send another cab. We told her "never mind, you've lost a customer" and we took the bus. I dont' think we have experienced such poor customer service in a many years. If we need transportation in Key West for a future trip, sadly it will not be with the Five 6s Taxi Company. The fact is I emailed the above to the 5 6s customer service following our stay, and never received as much as a response.
After making our way from where we'd been dropped off from our cruise ship at Mallory square back almost to the cruise ship again to Fort Zachary Taylor State park, our poor 84 year old mom was plumb tuckered out. We knew we couldn't walk her all the way back again to our shuttle pick up point, so as we went in we stopped a pedicab that was leaving to see how to get someone back out to pick us up when we were done. He gave us the phone number and said to call and someone would be back out quick as could be to get us. When the time came we called numerous times without anyone picking up. We left a message and started walking out of the park for fear of not getting back to the shuttle stop in time to get back to the ship.
Fortunately, we soon saw a cab coming in to drop someone off. We flagged him on his way out, and soon had a ride back to our destination. The cost was less than $8, which was almost half what the dollar a minute would have cost us in the pedicab. The driver was nice and we enjoyed getting to know him and his story in the few minutes it took to get back to Mallory Square. So my advice is, when in key West, if you want the cheaper, faster ride, look for a taxi!
Lots of taxi companies are here. Write down these numbers and stick them in your wallet:
Florida Keys Taxi Dispatch 2000 (Also called the Five 6s)
Key West Cab Company
The pink taxis you see all around Key West belong to a company called Five Sixes---why???
(305) 296-6666 is the phone number for the taxi company.
While I rarely drive while in Key West (due to limited parking) and I normally walk everywhere I need or want to go, I have on occasion, used the Five Sixes taxi's to get around.
They charge $7.50 per person from the Key West airport and charge $10 for any delivery service in Key West.
In-town rates are changeable but generally (as of Oct. 2006) were $2.25 for the 1st 1/5 mile and 50 cents for each additional 1/5 mile. You can get across town for less than $10 per person.
Unless you are coming in from the airport, or are poo-face drunk, you really shouldn't need a taxicab in and around Key West. It's such a small place, walking almost anywhere is no hassle.
However, if you do find yourself in serious need of a lift, there are plenty of taxis available in the area. In true south Florida spirit, quite a few of them are painted "la-te-da-club" pink.
I understand that the cabs can be fairly expensive, as the distances they can carry people aren't far enough to earn any serious money. So, I think there are zones and all sorts of surcharges to be dealt with. (Maybe they should initiate an "overweight person in a very small bathing suit and completely drunk to boot" surcharge. ;)
Any drinking establishment can summon a pink chariot if you need one.
There are 3 cab companies in town,1 is the Maxi Taxi/Pinks(same company)2 is Friendly(the yellows) and 3 independent vans(4).The island is only 2x4 miles so it is not that exspensive.Rates to/from Airport are per person if more than one person and by the zone you are going to or from-7.50 being the most and 5.50 being the least.I'd like to know what other cities charge that to the airport??Please realize that cab drivers are just trying to earn a living.Sure there are some rats that overcharge or drive you around the island(like the Pinks!) but others give people a break & get no thanks for it. The taxi rates have not gone up in 3yrs,meanwhile we pay 2.40$ a gallon for gas and our taxi leases have gone up every year too.And those pedi-cab/rickshaw taxi are THE MOST EXSPENSIVE OF ALL:tHEY CHARGE A 1$ A MINUTE.A 5$ taxi ride can be 12$ in a pedi-cab.Those guys are all new to the island and dont where anything is & you'll still pay while they pedal around getting lost.
Taxis are expensive
It goes something like $2.25 for first 1/5th of a mile and then for each additional 1/5TH of a mile $0.50 cents
So just going from the Historic Seaport to the airport cost us $7 each.
The MAXI TAXI'S can handle groups of up to 7 people, and the charge is per person.
This company says the groups rates start at $3.50.
