in february 1864 union general quincy gillmore ordered general truman seymour to make an expedition into north florida to cut confederate supply lines and to recruit negro soldiers. on february 20th 1864 seymour's troops met the confederates commanded by general joseph finnegan CSA at olustee. seymour commanded three colored regiments including the 54th massachusetts that had fought at the battle of fort wagner in south carolina. the battle of olustee was the largest battle of the civil war fought in florida. after a five hour engagement the union troops retreated to jacksonville. pictured is a monument to the battle erected in 1912. every february there is a re-enactment of the battle of olustee. scenes for the 1989 movie "glory" were shot during one of these re-enactments. at the site you can take a one mile walk around the battlefield which has informative postings about the battle.

millions of travelers bypass the central part of lake city on their way to and from florida on I-75. just 5 minutes east on US 90 is the quaint southern downtown area. central lake city offers local restaurants and antique stores and it is worth a few minutes to visit this interesting area.

the cool water grill is a very good seafood restaurant in lake city. the restaurant has a north florida "key west" decor but the food is very good and moderately priced. just a short drive on US 90 from the I-75 exit it is a nice change of pace from the interstate exit fast food fare.

ken's is a very good barbeque restaurant on US90 in lake city. established in 1968 ken's is a lake city institution. well worth the couple minute drive east of the I-75 exit on US90 to ken's. like most towns near the interstate the best restaurants are just a couple of minutes off the interstate exit.
