Island from the boat

I don't have enough money to dine here. The resort is supposed to be very romantic and exclusive. The island can only be accessed by launch, so you have to have reservations. The backdrops for the JFK movie PT 109 were constructed on this island.

Favorite Dish: A brunch starts at $40 per person

Protected Hawk Channel Anchorage
grandmaR profile photo

From Miami, the ICW goes down the west side of the Keys. Most services and anchorages are on that side. But the channel is too shallow in some places for us to feel comfortable in it.

In any case, the ICW crosses over from the west side in Marathon (going under 7 mile bridge), and goes down the (by this time) south side in Hawk Channel.

Equipment: There's really only one protected anchorage that we can get into and that's passing by Little Palm Island and going up by the bridge between Big Pine and Little Torch Keys in New Found Harbor.

Little Torch Key from our boat

Favorite thing: New Found Harbor and the Little Torch Key area is a place where you are either local fisherman, or you are a rich guest at an expensive hide-away.

It is one area where you can anchor in a protected place. The problem is that there are no services for boaters - no docks, no stores - nothing. So if you get stuck here waiting out the weather, you'd better have enough food to eat, cause you aren't getting any more.

Fondest memory: I remember the kindness of another boater who told us where to anchor.

I also remember the little shore bird (that I couldn't get a good picture of) that came and walked around our boat.
