Bike path next to US1 by grandmaR Marathon has a very nice paved bike path alongside of US 1 (bayside). Biking is a very popular way to get around the area, especially by cruisers who don't have a car. They can usually manage to stow a bike or a folding bike on the boat. Some of the bigger boats even have motor scooters. Bikes can be rented if you just want to get some exercise, but generally if you have a car, it will usually be the easiest way to go. Biking is very hot in the sun. One problem with biking - there are some places like 7 mile bridge that it's not really safe to bike across (although you can ride your bike on the old bridge out to Pigeon Key). It is sometimes difficult and scary to cross US 1 (either on a bike or even on foot) if you are coming from or going to an oceanside location. There is sometimes a gravel track alongside the road oceanside, but it is not as even and it is inconsistent. Key West also has good bike paths. Leave a Comment

Taxis used to be a pretty good deal in Marathon. All trips were $4.00. Most phone booths have the numbers of the local cab companies posted. One of the local firms is Action Taxi (phone number below) and one is Sunset Taxi (web site below which the link seems to be broken). There is also A1 Cab. Recently we have been charged varying prices for cabs which do not seem to be related to the distance traveled. Leave a Comment

Bus shelter by grandmaR I often rest at this bus stop on the way back from walking to Castaways. I had heard there was a local Greyhound bus that went up and down the keys, but I didn't really believe it until today (March 17, 2004) when I actually SAW a Greyhound bus which had "Local" on the signboard. This is the information: Miami Dade Transit Bus - fee $1.50 Florida City to Marathon with scheduled stops in Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada. Bus departs Publix Supermarket in Marathon going north7:50 AM, 3:30 PM, 5:30 PM, 9 PM and 11 PM. You can hail the bus anyplace along US 1. However, the bus I saw was coming from the Key West direction. So maybe it was the... Greyhound Keys Shuttle - leaves Marathon Airport North - Daily 7:05 and 9:50 AM, 12:35 and 6:50 PM, South arrives at Marathon Airport 7:10 and 9:40 AM, 3:40 and 10:10 PM There are four departures each day from the Miami Airport. departures are scheduled to leave at 6:30 am, 12:45 pm, 4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm. Return trips from Key West leave at 6:00 am, 8:45 am, 11:30 am, and 5:45 pm. The trip between detinations takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes. Besides Key West and Miami , stops are made at BOCA CHICA, BIG COPPITT, SUGAR LOAF SHORES, CUDJOE KEY, RAMROD KEY, BIG PINE KEY, MARATHON ARPT., MARATHON, LAYTON, ISLAMORADA, TAVERNIER, KEY LARGO, HOMESTEAD, MIAMI SOUTH, MIAMI ARPT. The Florida Keys Scenic Highway is one incredible drive. One side you have the Atlantic Ocean and the other is the Gulf of Mexico. Driving down the highway was great. The views of the water was unbelievable. The shades of blue from deep aqua, to light turquoise to baby blue were a sight to see. Liz and I enjoyed driving this stretch of highway. There are plenty of spots to stop and eat, take pictures or just enjoy the views. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Beach in the Keys by tpangelinan Well you are in Florida, you must find a beach to sun on. There are nice beaches to laze around on and catch some rays. But watch out for the Man-O-Wars, big purple/blue balloon looking things with very long tentacles that have a painful and sometimes deadly sting. View of the coast by tpangelinan Along the coastal high you will find some views that you just have to pull over and take a photo. There is not as many beaches in the Florida Keys as you would think, this is more like what you will find. Still very nice and worth taken the shot. Make sure you have lots of batteries and film or memory. Leave a Comment

You can't avoid seeing this if you go to the Key West end of Marathon. And it is something that should be seen. When Flagler decided to extend his railroad down to Key West (which was at the time one of the major cities in Florida), he was originally going to built the railroad on fill, because that was cheaper than building bridges. But the locals needed the channel south of Vaca Key to get their produce from the bay side to Key West. Moser Channel is the only deep water route from one side to the other. So old Henry decided to build a bridge. Everyone said it could not be done. But he ordered special salt water cement from Germany, and his people built the bridge. After his death, the railroad was losing money, and the 1935 hurricane decimated the Islamorada area. His widow sold the railroad to the government, and they put a road on top of the rail bed. They used the old tracks to make a railing along the sides of the bridge. The third picture shows the underneath of the old bridge and how much narrower the track portion was. That was the road we used when we were living in Key West. The road was very narrow - so narrow that you had to fold in your left side mirrors, or you risked breaking them when you would hit the mirror of a vehicle coming the other direction. Now there is a new fixed bridge (the old bridge was a draw bridge) with a high span. Sailors with 65 foot masts have to wait until low tide to get under this bridge. In addition to this picture of the old bridge in 2004 (with the high level fixed bridge on the left side), the 2nd picture was taken in the same spot in 1966 and shows the drawbridge. The fourth picture shows the two bridges side by side. Leave a Comment

Aqua water, White Sand by PJcips The beach and grounds are beautifully kept. Even on a school holiday, there was enough sand and water space for all. Nice restrooms. Especially interesting are the coral banks that make up each of the points at the ends of the beach. Small shells liter the waters edge. Another plus for us. Sunset Show by PJcips Watching the sunset from the Seven Mile Bridge is spectacular. There are also good vantage points from the banks on either side of the bridge. The mood is festive because a lot of people come to the bridge each night for the show. I loved the flocks of pelicans flying overhead. Come early to ensure a parking space. Leave a Comment
