    Fishing

I am not a fisherperson or even a fisherwoman. I don't care for fishing. But fishing is big business in the Keys, and there were many fishing boats at our marina. I cannot vouch for ANY of them. Included is LATIGO, ADIOS and this one.

  • Charter Fishing in The Florida Keys - The Best

by kbartlow Updated Feb 12, 2011

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I went charter fishing for the first time on Bimini Bound Charters & Yacht Transfers when I was in the Florida Keys earlier this month. I had the best time with my friends and we caught the biggest fish I've ever seen.

The water was calm, navy blue (gorgeous) and the temperature was just perfect. Captain Sabo, the charter fishing captain was really nice and funny. The whole trip was really worth it and made my vacation in Marathon perfect. I am happy to say that I look forward to bringing my family down next time to go charter fishing. Thanks Captain!!!

Definitely make sure you are comfortable with the Captain and that he knows what he's doing. You can be a long way offshore and safety on the boat becomes extremely important. A good charter Captain will make sure everything is prepared. Be sure to ask what his experience is, how far he's gone out to sea, can he navigate without instruments should anything unfortunate happen. Last, enjoy and have fun. I know I did!!

    backwater fishing

another type of fishing that is popular in the florida keys is backwater fishing in the florida bay. backwater fishing requires a shallow draft boat that can go over shallow water near the flats and mangrove islands. you can fish for tarpon, snook, bonefish, permit, and snapper. because flats fishing does not require as much fuel as off shore fishing most back country charters are less expensive than off shore charters.

marathon is famous for it's excellent off shore fishing. the blue water zone is just past the reef about seven miles off shore. what is great about the keys is that you can deep water fish very close to shore. once you pass the reef depending on the time of year you can catch marlin, sailfish, dolphin (mahi mahi), tuna, wahoo, and sharks. on the reef you can catch yellowtail snapper, red snapper, grouper, and baracuda. pictured is my ex and capt. sal with a nice bull dolphin caught near the sombrero light off shore a number of years ago. the best time of the year to catch dolphin is in may and june.

    Head Boat Fishing

by grandmaR Updated Jul 5, 2005

They call themselves a "Fishing Party Boat" and a half day costs $27.00. At home we call a boat that takes out a lot of individuals fishing a "head boat" because they pay by the person or head.

This boat goes out and comes back morning, noon and afternoon, and sometimes for a sunset cruise in the evening behind our boat. They whoop and holler and carry on when they come back.

They moved down to Marathon after we arrived, and Bob says they were up in St. Augustine before they were came here.

I have not gone out with them.
