most visitors come to marathon for it's excellent salt water fishing. at the key colony marina you can book off shore and back country fishing charters. the key colony marina is located on 6th street off of US 1 at MM 54 oceanside.
I am not a fisherperson or even a fisherwoman. I don't care for fishing. But fishing is big business in the Keys, and there were many fishing boats at our marina. I cannot vouch for ANY of them. Included is LATIGO, ADIOS and this one.

Welcome to Comin Home Charters. Come on down to Marathon and experience the finest fishing in the Keys with Capt Terry Mutchler. Marathon, Florida is considered the light Tackle Sportfishing capitol of the world! Aboard Comin Home we will show you just what that means!
I went charter fishing for the first time on Bimini Bound Charters & Yacht Transfers when I was in the Florida Keys earlier this month. I had the best time with my friends and we caught the biggest fish I've ever seen.
The water was calm, navy blue (gorgeous) and the temperature was just perfect. Captain Sabo, the charter fishing captain was really nice and funny. The whole trip was really worth it and made my vacation in Marathon perfect. I am happy to say that I look forward to bringing my family down next time to go charter fishing. Thanks Captain!!!
Definitely make sure you are comfortable with the Captain and that he knows what he's doing. You can be a long way offshore and safety on the boat becomes extremely important. A good charter Captain will make sure everything is prepared. Be sure to ask what his experience is, how far he's gone out to sea, can he navigate without instruments should anything unfortunate happen. Last, enjoy and have fun. I know I did!!
Captain Hook's Marina & Dive Center has a lot to offer! They do dive and snorkel trips daily on the Reef Hopper! They also offer amazing private fishing trips and boat rentals! So now you can actually rent your own boat and go fishing! They also have a pond where they feed the fish every day at 4 o'clock! Large store with dive equipment, fishing tackle, t-shirts, and all kinds of souvenirs!
another type of fishing that is popular in the florida keys is backwater fishing in the florida bay. backwater fishing requires a shallow draft boat that can go over shallow water near the flats and mangrove islands. you can fish for tarpon, snook, bonefish, permit, and snapper. because flats fishing does not require as much fuel as off shore fishing most back country charters are less expensive than off shore charters.
marathon is famous for it's excellent off shore fishing. the blue water zone is just past the reef about seven miles off shore. what is great about the keys is that you can deep water fish very close to shore. once you pass the reef depending on the time of year you can catch marlin, sailfish, dolphin (mahi mahi), tuna, wahoo, and sharks. on the reef you can catch yellowtail snapper, red snapper, grouper, and baracuda. pictured is my ex and capt. sal with a nice bull dolphin caught near the sombrero light off shore a number of years ago. the best time of the year to catch dolphin is in may and june.
Another one of what we would call a head boat.

It was next to Captain Hooks which offered scuba diving, and had a kind of aquarium pool.
They call themselves a "Fishing Party Boat" and a half day costs $27.00. At home we call a boat that takes out a lot of individuals fishing a "head boat" because they pay by the person or head.
This boat goes out and comes back morning, noon and afternoon, and sometimes for a sunset cruise in the evening behind our boat. They whoop and holler and carry on when they come back.
They moved down to Marathon after we arrived, and Bob says they were up in St. Augustine before they were came here.
I have not gone out with them.
pictured is a sailfish caught in february off of the marathon hump about 30 miles off shore. january and february is the best time of the year to catch sailfish in the keys.
pictured is a nice tuna catch caught in the blue water zone about 15 miles off shore from marathon. these tuna were caught in october a number of years ago.
