Merritt Island Things to Do

  • National Wildlife Refuge

There is a visitors centre which can provide you with info on flora and fauna.Black Point Wildlife Drive is a 6 mile loop. It's free to all & makes for a nice, gentle, quiet and relaxed self-guided nature tour.I have been here twice and each visit afforded me different sightings of animals. The second trip coincided with migrating birds stopping...

  • Visit Kennedy Space Center

A visit to KSC is a must if you are in the Merritt Island area. The Visitors Complex is much more impressive than the air and space museum in Washington DC (in my humble opinion) since KSC is where the real action is. I have been spoiled in the past, going on the VIP tours of KSC where I was able to view the launch platforms up close and personal...

  • Wild Magic

Merritt Island is one of the best places to see wildlife. If you have not seen some of these creatures free in the wild before, you will feel like you are in the presence of magic when you do see one.The best way to see them is to get up with the sun on a still day and head to the river. One side of the island is traced by a road called Tropical...

Merritt Island Nightlife

Like I said, theres not much to do on Merritt Island but,as of May 14 2001, we do have a club. Club DVO (pronounced dee-vo) is located on County Road 3 (Courtenay Pkwy) and provides punk music into the early morning hours. The reason I say as of May 14 is because there have been rumors of ectstasy use and some locals want to shut it down. There are also some night clubs in Cocoa Beach, such as the Storm Club. Club Dvo is all ages and Storm Club is 18 and up with I.D.

Dress Code: At club Dvo anything goes. The majority is wearing lots of spikes and safety pins. Storm club is a bit more upscale.

If you are waiting at a Florida intersection for the light to turn green, you will need to wait a bit longer to make sure the intersection is clear after it has turned before you go. Around here a newly changed red light means “Hurry up!” to the oncoming traffic. By writing this I am not condoning the practice of red-light rush. I’m merely issuing a warning to tourists. I have seen many perfectly sensible people get clobbered in Florida intersections because they made the foolish assumption that the green light meant it was safe to go.

  • Easter Shells – Save the Chickens some...

This may be of some use to families vacationing on the beach this Easter. We dye shells every Easter instead of Eggs. The day/s before Easter go to one of the many beaches or rivers and collect a bag of the lighter colored shells. These are the common shells that litter any beach, but in the Merritt Island vicinity, Satellite Beach often offers up...

  • Have patience with the Barista

I am mostly happy to report that our little island café is visited by lots of vacationers from New York. Most are jovial and friendly- jovial, friendly, and impatient. I imagine that coffee making is a fine art in NY NY. There must be trained professionals behind every counter who can instantaneously whip up the finest cappuccino while keeping...

Merritt Island Warnings and Dangers

  • Storm season June-October

It starts far off some time between 1:00 and 3:00 pm. You hear it rumbling like an unbalance train coming from the inland areas. Then night comes across the river with a wall of rain. The water crest and white caps as boaters race toward the shore and your head feels like its going to explode as the pressure drops. A flash of light severs the sky...

  • Fire Ants! Itchy little @&$*#'s!

The most annoying itchy insect bite you can get in Florida is form the fire ant. Some people are allergic to them and can die or pass out from the bite. One fire ant bite will probably only annoy you, but the little @&$*##$&’s use team work and you are likely to be bitten by several at once. Luckily they are easy to avoid. The only time I get...

There is a family owned meat market on Plumosa Street called Hayes market. If you are planning on grilling or barbequing you defiantly want to take a designated driver and get your provisions at Hayes. Once you have placed your order and shown ID, the proprietor will give you free beer while you wait for the order to be filled. Vegetarians can take advantage of this too, because the market has a deli with lots of meatless salads.

The beer has a pleasant nutty yeasty favor but, I can’t remember the brand. Really they don’t give you enough beer for you to need a designated driver, that is, unless you are pint sized like me.

Plumosa is off route three (also known as Courtney). It is the last intersection before the mall as you are headed east. If you are headed east turn right on Plumosa. If you are headed west turn left.

Favorite thing: Merritt Island is a small place and therefore there isn't much to do. When I hosted a foreign exchange student the first thing we did was go to Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach (about 10 minutes away) They have everything a tourist could want. Ron Jon's takes up appr. 4 city blocks and you can rent beach gear there. Most local surfers don't shop there but it is a sight to behold.Ron Jon's is located on the corner of A1A and State Road 520 in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
