Miami International Airport/Airplane: A Horrible Airport Experience

  • I have flown in and out of MIA before with no problem except some construction issues. This time was a nightmare. It seemed we were on the TSA list for them to bother. It all started when we were told we had to check in our carryon bag which was of regulation size and had no problem with when we flew down. After opening up our bag and shifting things (which did not change the size), the anoying man let us through. We were on another line where the TSA agent was too busy on a personal cell phone call to even help us and waved us to a different line. After finally getting to our gate we had a chance to calm down after our ordeal. I don't think I'll fly into MIA any time soon.

  • Miami is the gateway to the Carribean (except Cuba) and Southamerica. There are a lot of Carribean and South American Airlines flying into Miami. Main carriers here in Miami: Air Jamaica, Servicensa, Avensa, Aerolieas Argentinas, Lan Chile, Varig, Mexicana, Aero Mexico, Avianca Colombia, BWIA, Air Aruba, ALM, Bahamas Air, Cayman Airways, Aero Costa Rica, TACA, Equatoriana, LAB Bolivia, COPA Panama and others.
Most American Airlines fly also to Miami Int'l or at least to Ft. Lauderdale. American has its main Hub here.
There are also connections to Europe. Swissair, Air France, Iberia, British Airways, Lufthansa, Virgin, Sabena, TAP, Alitalia, South African and a lot of other Airlines are flying into Miami...

If you're travelling from somewhere within a few hours' flight, and at the last minute, DEFINITELY opt for flying to Fort Lauderdale instead of Miami International Airport. I couldn't get a flight to MIA anywhere near my departure date or price range, but through Fort Lauderdale, it was easier & cheaper.
F.L. is north of Miami, by about a half-hour drive, so to big-city dwellers, it's just like travelling across town... there ARE good shuttle-taxis available, where a group of up to about 6 people can share a cab (usually a van) - it cost me only $15, instead of a likely $50 taxi ride direct. Of course, the driver got himself lost (not just once, but 4 times! Thankfully, a couple of the passengers were native Miamians and directed him street-by-street - but I'm sure this was an isolated incident).
If you arrive during the day, it's not a big deal to get a local train down to the Miami MetroRail (the city's above-ground subway-type transit system - since the land is quite flat & swampy, there's no way to build an underground system), and then take it into the city, then transferring to whatever bus you need. If you have a little patience, it's a much better deal at @$5-10, but not if you're dragging a months' worth of suitcases with you.
The bus & MetroRail system is quite efficient, there are adequate maps & information around, and (since Sept. 11), enough security to ask for directions.

In Miami Beach, there's also The Wave, a small shuttle bus which costs 25 cents, & drives in circles around the main area of Miami Beach - if you're going within its limits, it's a steal of a deal!

Walking is good - there's usually something to see on the way to wherever you're going - and because Miami is 'flat-as-a-pancake', geographically, it's easy on the legs. The only ups-&-downs are when crossing bridges over the Miami river inlet.

Rollerblading - I took my own, since I'd used them only about 2 hours over 5 years... and spent a whole day on them, easily... again, flat land (& usually good pavement) makes a good exercise.

Bicycling - same as above - easy on the legs, & presumably plenty of rental places.

Cruise ship - the Miami Port is one of the busiest around, and is entirely on a separate island from the mainland. A huge bridge (a 'short' 15-minute walk across!) is the only link, but there's lots of traffic & few pedestrians.

Be sure that you got enough times for your transit!! Miami Airport is huge, and sometimes they change the boarding gate at last minutes...:(

  • Miami International Airport is six miles west of the city, with Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport about 30 miles to the north. Both airports have 24-hour shuttle bus services, taxis, limousine hire and a choice of national and local rental car agencies.
The best way to get around the Miami area is by car and a number of the rental firms offer hourly as well as daily and weekly rates. To avoid getting trapped in traffic congestion in the downtown area there is the 'Metromover'. Part bus, monorail and train, it comprises a couple of computer-controlled carriages that run on an elevated track and offers great views of central Miami.

  • Was a bit funny to be forced to enter my own country through immigration, and just for transit, but well. This whole airport is now completely to be renovated, and the parts that yet are finished do in deed look great, other parts really are run down, and there are long distances to walk.
Passing through migration is no fun at all either, though I didnt have any troubles.
