The Travel Slut in Miami during Super Bowl 41

by TheTravelSlut Written Feb 7, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I took a short trip to Miami, South Beach, and Miami Gardens (where the Miami Dolphins Stadium is) and enjoyed some of the festivities, activities and parties associated with all the hoopla surrounding the Super Bowl.

I arrived in Miami-South Beach on Thursday before Super Bowl Sunday and departed before the game started on Sunday in time enough to watch the game on a big screen TV along with many friends.

The energy in and around Super Bowl events is real. And so are the inflated prices for everything from a hotel room, meal and bottle of water.

Equipment: If you have any favorite team items, bring them from home because while the vendors @ Super Bowl-sanctioned locations will have just about any item you can imagine, it will be relatively expensive.

    American Airlines Arena

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

American AIrlines Arena is right by Bayside and Miamarina. In addition to being the home of the Miami Heat (which I understand is a basketball team), they also have a lot of concerts there.

While we were there in March there were two Miami Heat games, a Britney Spears concert and Disney on Ice.

When we were on a mooring at Rickenbacker Marina, there was an ultralight place right next to us at the end of the causeway. They did instruction and they have ultralights for sale (new or used)

15 hours of instruction costs $1820 prepaid. Their website says

The Ultralight Pilot License (ACS Aerodynamic Control Sea) issued through the USUA, takes approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting, requiring 15 hours of ultralight flight. Within that time frame you will be given instruction in basic ultralight water handling including, plow, and step taxi procedures. The student will then start Basic Air Maneuvers, flying the ultralight aircraft straight level, "S" turns, climbs and descents, using power, collision avoidance through an effective scan, slow flight, and stall.

Equipment: They also do tours. Any one route is $70, two combined routes is $90, up to all 5 routes for $180

B South Beach / Fisher Island / Virginia Key
    C Key Biscayne - Lighthouse / Stiltsville

    AmericanAirlines Arena

by ValbyDK Written Apr 9, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The AmericanAirlines Arena is located on the Bay front of Miami and is home to the Miami Heat (NBA) and Miami Sol (WNBA).

The arena seats 19600 when fully utilized for basketball, but the upper levels can be closed to create a more intimate atmosphere of 16000 seats. The facility can be configured in five separate ways for concerts and other events, seating minimum 5000 and maximum 19600 patrons.

The AmericanAirlines Arena opened on December 31, 1999, and the first event was a Gloria Estefan concert. Two days later, on January 2, 2000, the Miami Heat played their first game (and won) in the new arena.

Check the webpage for upcoming events and ticket info.

Miami is baseball mad. My grandson has been going to the batting cage since he was 4 or 5 and playing on baseball teams - first coach pitch and now player pitch (and he's now taking pitching lessons)

It's possible to have a kid play baseball in Miami year round although summer is less attractive because of the heat.

We have seen this Arena being build, when we where there in 1999. The signs told us it would open on December 31, 1999 with a concert by Gloria Estefan.

It really looked they never where going to make that that but they did. The amount of seats range from 16,000 to 19,600 when the Miami Heat is playing.

When there are concerts or other events it can house from 5,000 to 20,000 people.

    Picture taken june 2000

Equipment: Well take a good spirit with you doesn't matter if your attending a concert or a Miami Heat game.

There are plenty of golf courses in the Miami area, the Doral being the most famous.

If you're like me, and don't golf unless you have to, then there are a couple of things to know about Miami golfing.

    1) Don't go during the middle of the day. It can be hotter than the depths of hell, and if you don't really love the game - then it may not be any fun at all...

    2) Courses are busy during the weekends. It is not uncommon to be asked to play with another group and to speed up your game during play. Don't seek solitude on the course

    3) They serve alcohol on most courses by way of a bar cart. Need I say more??

Equipment: Bring your own clubs if you are a fanatic. Otherwise, the clubhouse or proshop has high-end rentals for reasonable rates.

    My idea of golf...

Huge oaks canopy most of this stretch,

    With such gorgeous weather,
    and large bodies of water

    sailing can be a temptation
or an additional choice of things to do.

    Orange Bowl

by Dabs Written Feb 19, 2013

American college football teams vie for a spot in one of several bowl games that are held during the 1st week in January including the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Cotton Bowl and the Orange Bowl which is played not at the Miami Orange Bowl but rather at the Sun Life Stadium. These games are held at a fixed location, the Orange Bowl is held every year in Miami in Miami. While it hasn't always been the case, since 2007 the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion has played in this game unless they are one of the top two teams in the country in which case they play in the BSC bowl.

The BSC bowl is the national championship, it is played at different warm weather venues throughout the country, in 2013 it happened to be in Miami so during the 1st week of January there were two college bowl games held there with an enormous influx of fans wearing the colors of their teams. Based on our observations, Notre Dame fans outweighed Alabama fans by a huge majority
