Beautiful beach located in North Miami Beach. Clean beautiful sandy beaches, great swimming and popular with Europeans due to it's clothing optional status. People here are laid back, sociable and contrary to what you may think, gawkers are more likely to be curious 1st timers rather than the mostly regulars who have come to love this beach for the closeness and friendliness that (ahem) nudity seems to bring. Removing clothing is NOT required, and only about 70% of people are actually clothes free. All levels of nudity both male and female are to be found throughout. People will not judge you on wether you choose to take your clothes off or not and body shape/size is not critized here. Truly a relaxed, feel free atmosphere! At one point, you might start wanting to find a stretch of beach which does not have the sometimes overpopulated and constricted feel of central South Beach (like between 3rd and 7th). When that time comes, try heading further north along the coast towards the area of 79-87th streets. There are several public beaches in this area which do not suffer from the tourist invasions which can sometimes occur in the more southern parts of South Beach. Youýll notice that these beaches are frequented by the locals of Miami and are remarkably a bit cleaner and quieter. A good plan could be to start your day on the beach near 3rd Street, and then move north towards 87th street in the afternoon. Leave a Comment Directions: 79th-87th streets at South Beach (US1)

A beautiful Afternoon on Miami Beach by melissa_bel Once you are in Miami Beach, the shore is not far… cross Ocean Drive and voila... the ocean is yours. The beach is beautiful and the water has the colour of a swimming pool. If you like snorkeling, the water is a little bit blurry at first but passed a big sandbar, it is crystal clear and you'll be able to see some critters. Hopefully for me and my ego, top-models are not here. During the winter and early spring, South Beach looks like a world models gatherings. They even have their own beach volley tournament, volleypalooza, that became kind of a fixture now. Ladies, South Beach is the only public beach I know that allows topless sunbathing. So, if you’re not shy and want to get rid of those tan lines, you know what to do. Leave a Comment

South Beach is actually in Miami Beach which is north of Miami. I find this kind of geography very confusing. I'm not a beach person or a party hearty person, so I haven't been to South Beach, or at least not in a long time, and I've not been to Miami Beach much either. The Miami Beach website says: "Miami Beach has a rich history as a trend setting arts center, from the world famous nightclubs of the 50's, to the rich cultural life of today's modern South Beach. The City of Miami Beach has an identity that is intrinsically linked to the arts, and today our entertainment, production and arts communities are stronger than ever. Miami Beach is truly a major international entertainment and cultural destination." Leave a Comment Directions: South Beach: I-95 North or South to 395 (MacArthur Causeway) over Biscayne Bay. 395 turns into 5th Street. For Ocean Drive, Washington Avenue or Collins Avenue areas, continue on Fifth Street to the end and turn left on the appropriate street.Website: http://www.ci.miami-beach.fl.us/

by call_me_rhia Ocean Drive is a street in South Beach running along the Ocean – as the name suggests. It is known for its Art Deco buildgins and hotels which line the street. It’s full of restaurants and bars – mostly offering cheap “speacials” and it’s great for people-watching. We found it very relaxing and pleasant in the morning – and buzzing with activity in the afternoon – especially on Sunday, when it was jam-packed with people “posing and showing off”… either their new clothes or their posh cars and motorbikes. Deco District tour guide points out the Clay Hotel by BarbBC3 Don’t be surprised if you run into a “secret” entrance while staying at the hostel in South Beach, the Clay Hotel. The building used to house Al Capone’s offices and it’s said that he had many secret entrances and exits, some of which are supposedly still there. You can hear many interesting tidbits about the history of South Beach, some of which was built with mafia money, if you take a walking tour of the Art Deco District. The Miami Design Preservation League, runs a number of tours. There are also a few led by a local historian, Dr. Paul George, who runs a “Mystery, Murder & Mayhem Tour.” Details below. Two locals watch a cruise ship off South Beach by BarbBC3 With so many beaches to choose from, it’s fun to pick the one that suits your mood – as long as you’re willing to travel a little. There are plenty of options and if your visit is long enough, you might want to try a few. After all, beach hopping is free (almost). A couple of my favorites: - South Beach: Besides having a huge stretch of beach, there are lounge chair rentals, jet-ski rentals, volleyball nets, and just a great atmosphere overall. After swimming or sunbathing (topless if you wish), you can walk to Ocean Drive and have lunch at an outdoor café (I like Cordova Café and the Front Porch). - Crandon Park on Key Biscayne: Just South of Miami Beach, Key Biscayne is a small island with high-priced homes and two state parks. Crandon Park has calm waters, fine sand and palm trees for shade. The drive to the park itself is worth it for the amazing view from the bridge ($1 toll). The only drawback to Crandon beach is the sea grass that grows underwater, but if you stay on the southern end, you’ll avoid it. The sea grass isn’t bad for snorkeling though. I saw a sea horse once (really!). There’s also an area with a carousel and a playground for kids, as well as a small nature center with aquariums. Entrance to the park is $4 per car. - Hollywood Beach: It’s not in Miami (about 20 miles North) and has a different vibe altogether. Maybe it’s the boardwalk with restaurants and shops (some good; some tacky or rundown), maybe it’s all the rollerbladers and bikers that come close to running you over and maybe it’s the hordes of French Canadians that take over every winter. Whatever it is, it all adds up to a casual atmosphere that is almost the antithesis of South Beach. It’s fun and no one cares what you wear here – the tackier, the better. Rollerblades & bikes are rented on the boardwalk. There’s a fee for parking at either a meter on the street ($1 per hour) or a garage (?). Leave a Comment

Versace's House by Alless This is Gianni Versace's House on South Beach, Casa Casuarina ,where Versace was killed on July 15th, 1997.Casa Casuarina was originally built in 1930 and was modeled after the Alcazar de Colon in Santo Domingo, a residence built in 1510 by the son of Christopher Columbus and reputedly the oldest existing house in the western hemisphere.Gianni Versace purchased the building, then operating as the Amsterdam Palace apartments, in 1992 for $2.9 million. The Italian designer was gunned down on the steps of his mansion, the only privately owned residence on Ocean Drive. It’s real center of night life. The street is so crowded that you can’t even walk. Many bars, discos and nightclubs can be found there. South Beach is built in special style named Coco, which is very specific for this part of Miami. Leave a Comment

eden roc hotel by doug48 pictured is one of the famous 1950's hotels on miami beach. back in the 50's and 60's the eden roc and the fontainebleau were the premiere entertainment venues in miami beach. today most of the famous resort hotels on miami beach have been demolished. this is one of the few remaining from the "golden post war era" of miami beach. if you have the chance see it now because it will not be in it's present form forever.
