vizcaya

vizcaya is a very interesting place to visit when in miami. it was the winter home of james deering who was the vice president of the international harvester company in the early 20th century. vizcaya was built between 1914 and 1916. the building and gardens were inspired by italian renaissance villas that deering had visited in italy. the villa was designed by burrall hoffman. most of the decorative elements and furniture were imported from europe. the construction of vizcaya required almost 10% of the population of miami at the time. a worthwhile place to visit when in miami.

Taken through the window
4 more images

I visited Vizcaya when we lived in Key West with the antique car club. We had the cars on display in the courtyard (toward the street) for some kind of festival. I toured the house at that time and took pictures (two of which are included)

We went back this past visit and no photography was permitted inside the mansion - not even by professional photographers. So I took some pictures through the window.

I thought perhaps I could buy a picture of the things I wanted to record, but what I really wanted was a weather vane which showed the speed and direction of the wind inside the room, and I could not find that in any photos or postcards.

Professional photographers pay a whooping fee just to take photos outside.

stone barge

a very interesting thing to see at the vizcaya villa is the stone barge. this "barge" is sculpted from coral stone as a breakwater to protect boats visiting the villa. the stone barge is modeled after the barge of the doges of venice. the sculptures on the barge were made by a. stirling calder. a very impressive site at the villa of vizcaya.

Beautiful Viscaya Mansion and early home of James Deering, the early 20th Century industrialist.
Mansion is set amidst beautifully landscaped gardens and fountains overlooking the bay of Miami.
Christmas and holidays are a special time to see the Mansion which is beautifully furnished with antique and European furniture.
Queen Elizabeth, The Pope, Presidents Clinton, Reagan have all been guests at Viscaya having hosted meetings and events within its walls.

If you're a plant enthusiast, behind the magnificent coral rock walls sit over 30 acres of beautiful gardens including many a collector's plants by Mr. Deering.

The gazebo at Viscaya

Viscaya is a beautiful old mansion on the bay that is now open to the public. It was originally the summer home of John Deering, (Deering tractor ) The gardens are great, and there is even a maze garden, but it's too short to actually get lost in. All of this is set against a tropical, waterfront view with a stone dock that is shaped like a large boat, and a really pretty gazebo. Viscaya is very close to Key Biscayne, downtown Miami and Coconut Grove, and is worth seeing.

Entrance to Villa Vizcaya

The Vizcaya Mansion and formal Italian Gardens. Built between 1914 and 1916 in the Italian reneissance style, it employed ten percent of Miami's population during it's construction. I know I said I would not post obvious tourist places but I have received questions about the place so here it is.
Very pretty Italian formal gardens. Beautiful mansion at the ocean's edge. A good photo opportunity. If you do not wish to visit the mansion, tell the guy in the ticket boothyou just want to take pictures of the gardens and sometimes they just let you in for free, hang a right at the mansion, go straight to the Gardens.A good opportunity to compare French and Italian garden design. If you have been to the gardens in Versailles, France, you will notice the difference between the symetric and linear design of the French gardens and the ramdom and more free design of Italian gardens.

Couldn't YOU move in here easily?

Vizcaya is a scenic mansion built in 1916 by a certain James Deering. You'll see it in many movies (I believe Scarface...) as it is really impressive. Marble and gold are everywhere, but also the coral stones!

Vizcaya Garden

There are undeniably stunning gardens, complete with beautiful fountains. Out back ,
a stone gondola in the center of the docking
area acts as a breakwater , and there's a charming gazebo. Several narrow trails run through the grounds as well.
