This is not part of a sophisticated metro system. It's a very limited above ground metro rail to get you around downtown Miami connecting the business district with shopping area and the college. It is free so there are no tickets to buy. There is an inner loop and outer loop. The outer loop takes you further than downtown Miami and will soon (like next month) connect to the Miami International Airport. I found it to be handy when I wanted to visit the Art Museum and Bayside Market Place.
I used the metro to get to the hospital - my daughter or SIL took me to a station and there was one right at the hospital.
The metro website says:
Miami-Dade County's 22-mile, elevated rapid transit system runs from Kendall through South Miami, Coral Gables, and downtown Miami; to the Civic Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital area; and to Brownsville, Liberty City, Hialeah, and Medley in northwest Miami-Dade, with connections to Broward and Palm Beach counties at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station.
The 22 accessible Metrorail stations are about one-mile apart, providing easy access for bus riders, pedestrians, and passengers being dropped off and picked up. Parking is available at 19 Metrorail stations, including the new Palmetto Station.

Metromover is an elevated metroline that makes a circle trip around the Miami downtown business district. The cars have no drivers and conductors. So there must be someone playing with a remote control somewhere and play with these cars. Seems like a nice job.... Also, there is no conductor, because rides are free! We did the complete loop, without getting off at one of the stations, just for fun and to kill some time before we were able to join our sunset cruise of that evening.

LONG DISTANCES, TAKE METRO-RAIL
This city ain't made for walking! The distances here are measured in kilometers. If you have not rented a car (you should if you stay here more than 3 days!!), you better take the MetroRail, a wonderful elevated train.
Here there is no underground, as there are many channels, and the ground is not suitable for subterranean trains.
