Metromover is a free automated people-mover system that serves downtown Miami from Omni to Brickell and connects with Metrorail at Government Center and Brickell stations. There are 20 conveniently-located wheelchair-accessible Metromover stations.

Our cruise left from the Port of Miami. Since we live in the FL Keys, it was very easy to get to. There are signs telling you where to go; you'll be okay just following the signs.

Embarkation: Lines were long but moved swiftly. When we mentioned that our luggage had been lost by our airline, our processor asked for the lost baggage claim, copied it and said Carnival would take over expediting getting our lost luggage to our first port. He said they would work with the airline for us. From that time on the purser's office handled it. They could not have treated us better. When we told them the next day that our suits/dresses were in the missing luggage, they gave us vouchers to rent tuxes (yes, they had a woman's tux) for free. They called our cabin to report progress (or lack of it) by the airline in finding our luggage. They sent letters from the purser explaining the luggage had not been found and how much they regretted it. We felt Carnival did a 1st class job & went out of their way to ensure we had a great vacation Keep in mind that Carnival had nothing to do with the airline booking/lost bags. I booked the air separately from the cruise.

Cabin: We had booked a guaranteed cabin w/balconey and obstructed view but were most pleased to be upgraded to a non-obstructed view cabin on the same deck Our cabin was slightly larger than anticipated. It was clean and well kept during our entire cruise. The bath was larger than anticipated. The balconey was quite small but very nice

Dining: Our table in the Empire Dining room was at the very back of the ship against a large porthole window. The food was very good to excellent. The service was excellent and our waiters were most entertaining at times. The buffet style food on the Lido deck was...buffet style. While some of it was very tasteful, everything was just mildly warm.

Entertainment: Most all of the evening shows were very good to excellent. The exception was the comedy routines. They were fair to not so fair.

Spa/Gym: The gym was most impressive. We used the steam rooms and both enjoyed them.

Ports: Please see our sections on Panama, Belize and Cozumel

    We highly recommend Carnival.

  • The Miami Metro system is a fast and efficient way to get around Miami. The metrorail contains one main line with 22 stations(a subway/metro line), serving downtown Miami and most of the suburbs. The metromover, a downtown metro system with 3 lines, operates in the downtown Miami area. The metromover goes almost everywhere in downtown, and is free to ride. The metrorail costs $1.50 USD to ride. Metrorail goes to Dadeland(an urban area south of downtown, with malls, condos, etc), South Miami, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, the University of Miami, Brickell, downtown Miami, Hialeah, Medley, Miami's medical district, as well as many other suburbs. Metromover operated a downtown loop, which stays in the central business district, a brickell line, which services the Brickell financial district in southern downtown, and an omni line, which services the "Midtown Miami" area to the north of downtown. Transfers from Metrorail to metromover occur at Government Center and Brickell stations. You can also transfer from Metrorail to Tri-Rail at the Metro Transfer station. The tri-rail is a commuter rail line which can take you directly to Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, and Palm Beach. The tri-rail line is over 70 miles long and serves almost all of South Florida. The one place that is not accessible using public transport is Miami Beach. Plans are in the works to extend Metrorail as a subway or possibly light rail across Biscayne Bay to the beach within a few years. Other possible extensions are a north corridor of Metrorail running to Dolphins Stadium in northern Miami-Dade, and a direct metrorail connector to the airport, which would eliminate the current situation where a transfer from the main line is neccessary to access the airport. Overall, the public transit system, while not as large as New York and Boston, is a much better alternative than driving in the terrible Miami traffic. Although parts of Miami are known for their high crime rates, the metrorail is very safe.

  • For the folks from otside the US, this is how the street numbering system works. Streets run East/West, Avenues run North/South. The location prefix before the number (NW, NE etc.) is designated by the location relative to the Centeral Business District. A line north/south and another line east/west is drawn intersecting at the centre of town (right near Central Station where the Buses, Trains and Metro Mover all stop), the streets and avenues are all numbered from that point. The first street north of town centre is 1st st, if the location is west of centre it will be NW 1st st. If east then NE 1st st. The first street south of town centre is 1st st and if it's west of town centre the SW 1st st, if east the SE 1st st. The same principal applies for avenues, the first avenue either side if the center line is 1st Av, the direction designation is relative to the intersection at the centre of town. It's a good system and makes navigating far easier than in other countries where there is only a name for each street.
Another point of interest is that in off peak times traffic lights at some intersections flash amber while the lights for the intersecting street flash red. This means the vehicles on the amber flashing road can drive straight through the intersection as if the light were green and the vehicles with the red flashig traffic light must treat the light as a give way sign. A great system.

    Buses: Public transport around Miami

  • You can buy a weekly bus pass which gives you unlimited bus usage for 1 week which works out cheapest. If you're only doing the odd bus trip here and there, make sure you ask the driver for a transfer before geting off the bus if you need to get onto another bus to get to your destination. A transfer will get you a discount on your next bus fare, they only work in one way, the return fare is regarded as a seperate trip but the transfer works the same way.
Also worth noting is that the buses do not give change, you can of course pay more than the correct fare and ride on the bus, but you will not get change. Train stations have vending machines where you put notes in and get a token, you the put the token in a slot and you get quaters out of the vending machine, it's handy to have plenty of quaters but make sure the note is the right way up to make the vending machine accept it.
If you catch a train and intend catching a bus from a station make sure you get on the right bus as the number will be the same but they will be going in opposite directions (to the centeral station or from centeral station) there will be two stops at the train station for the same number bus.

Buses J (route 110) and K (route 111) connect to run betwee MIA and South Beach. Also see bus 236 (Airport Owl) which runs between South Beach and MIA in the late night to early hours of the morning. Allow yourself plenty of time if you want to catch the bus to or from the airport.

Buses k,m,c and s run from South Beach to Government Centre Station At West Flagler (NW/NE 1st st.) Street. Government centre is the ceteral area in Downtown where the Library (free internet), Miami Dade Cultural Centre, Metro Mover Station (which is free to rie on), Train Station and the Dade County Court House are located. The buses mostly stop in the bus depot, but some buses stop in the streets across the road adjoining the depot, ask a driver if your not clear on where to catch a bus.

  • FlightLink By Greyhound: There are three departures daily connecting the Miami airport with a number of local Greyhound terminals, including its Bayside (downtown) terminal at 700 Biscayne Blvd. The Miami West Greyhound terminal is adjacent to the airport at 4111 N.W. 27th St. Call 1-888-BUS-N-FLY for details.

Super Shuttle provides shared ride service to and from the Greyhound terminal. Call (305) 871-2000 for information.

Airport Owl route 236 (bus) www.miamidade.gov/transit/routes1.asp Route 110 stops at MIA.

Cab rides from the Miami International Airport are flat rates based on distance from the airport, so dont be concerned when the cab driver drives off without turning on the meter. A cab ride costs $28 or more from the airport to Miami Beach, $19-$22 to the Central Business District and slightly more to Coral Gables. Pickup is on the lower level, outside the baggage claim area. There may be an additional charge for extra baggage. The guide to cab fares is published in the Miami tourism handbook which is available from a multitude of places in the tourist district, the fees are probably also displayed in the cab itself, the rates do not include a tip for the driver.
