Getting around in Miami in a rental car isn't a big problem, the signs are everywhere for most tourist sites, but if you plan on staying in South Beach, I would think twice about it !!!! The parking fees at the hotels at the beach are out of control, not New York prices yet, but steadly getting there. Anyways everything on the beach is in walking distances !!!! Avoid the headache and just walk if your staying in South Beach !!!! Oh by the way Miami has one of the worst traffic problems in the entire United States Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Shuttle bus to NASDAQ by grandmaR Miami does have a public transportation system. In addition to the metrorail. There is an extensive bus system. The picture is of the shuttle buses out to the NASDAQ tennis tournament. Of course cars are the normal mode of transportation. Leave a Comment

by goingsolo Miami is a city where everything is spread out. We do not have the greatest public transportation system and the public transportation we do have is by no means efficient. Unless you're spending a few days on South Beach, having a car is a necessity. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Sailing with Karen by balisunshine Another adventurous way to get to or around Florida and the Caribbean is sailing as a crew member. Florida is a sailing capital of the world and there are plenty of boats coming and going. Bear in mind, this is not a free ride. You are on board to help with the sailing, cooking, and/or cleaning. So only those who feel comfortable in this setting should apply. You will most probably be asked to contribute to costs, which usually can be anywhere between $10 - $50 US a day. Having this experience with a few boats already, (I have sailed on 3) I strongly recommend that you take time in finding the right vessel before you board. A prior encounter with the captain is not always possible. Since most probably you will take a flight to meet up with the boat. Or the boat will be sailing to pick you up. Exchange as much information before hand, including pictures of the exterior and interior of the vessel, equipment on board, and a description with picture of the captain and his experiences. For females, make sure the captain is not looking for a personal mate. And is serious in his request. Otherwise, my experiences were learning ones. And traveling by sea can allow you to see places you may not have by land. Often it’s also cheaper. Try making a commitment for 2 weeks at first, and extend it if all goes well. Toll Plaza on Dolphin by CanuckMark If you are planning on doing any driving in Miami, be sure to always have plenty of change on hand - especially quarters ($0.25). There are lots of tolls in Miami, and you don't want to get stuck at a toll without money (trust me on this one!). Some of the tolls to expect include the Dolphin Expressway and as well as crossing the Venetian Causeway. Asking the toll booth operator for directions or otherwise extending the length of the actual toll-paying transaction may lead to local drivers expressing their disatisfaction with you... A tip to those who plan to collect a rental car at the airport upon arrival. Rental cars are not located in the terminal. Instead, you must first find your rental agency's desk inside the airport terminal. Once at the desk, you complete your contract and get a provisional contract from the agent there. You then must take a shuttle-bus from the main terminal to your car rental company's respective lot. The car rental companies all have their own shuttle buses. Thus, if you rent from Budget you must get on a Budget shuttle-bus. If you think that you can take the Enterprise shuttle to get there - you are wrong (I was!). Also, catching a shuttle at the main Terminal can be a harrowing experience. Essentially, you must exit the Terminal at the departures level and stand on the large sidewalk. When you see the shuttle bus from your company coming towards you - you MUST FLAG IT DOWN!! There are no designated stops and buses simply stop as flagged. For a safer bet, you can try to catch the same shuttle-bus below on the arrivals level where there appear to be some designated stops. However, as this is underground it is unbearably hot and full of exhaust fumes which does not lend to a nice introduction to your vacation. The key in all this is that you have to be ready to carry all your bags from the arrivals gate all the way downstairs to your car rental desk, back upstairs to the depature levels, place them on the shuttle-bus, and then again retrieve them from the shuttle bus once you arrive at the car rental lot. Pack light!! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Venetian Causeway by CanuckMark The best way to get around Miami is by car, given the poor bus service. Although driving in and around Miami may sound like a hazardous and difficult task, it really isn't - when compared to Brazil!! Miami is essentially all focused around US1, a large highway that travels north-south along the mainland part of Miami. Once you cross over one of the bridges leading into South Beach, the driving is also easy as this district is essentially constructed as a large grid with street generally intersecting north/south with east/west. At the same time, be sure to have lots of change on hand - there are tolls almost everywhere in Miami!! The one pitfall in all this is parking. Parking in Miami can be evil. There are a few municipal public-parking garages in South Beach. If you can get a spot there - take it! You can then walk all around South Beach and the Art Deco district. However, more than likely, you will not be able to get a public parking spot in the South Beach area. Do not plan to park on the street as an alternative. Although there are parking meters on the sides of the street, most of these are designated to specific restaurants/hotels and are not available to the general public. That means your only other option is valet parking. The good news is that there are literally hundred of valet parking options in South Beach. In fact, you will spend lots of time waving back to the countless valet operators who wave you over to their "spots". Valet parking in this district is not terrible expensive, depending on time of day and season. Plan for $8-$12USD for the day. The bad news is that getting your car back at the end of your day can take a bit of time Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Taxis are expensive but readily available. WATCH THE TAXI DRIVERS!!!! THEY WILL PUT ON X-TRA MILES BY DRIVING AROUND HOTEL PARKING LOTS; GOING 2-3 BLOCKS OUT OF THE WAY WHEN GOING AROUND ONE WAY STREETS, ETC. Just beware & dont be afraid to tell the driver that he is going out of his way or you are aware that he is putting on x-tra miles. I told the driver that the x-tra miles were comming out of his tip; since this was a return ride & we knew how much it was on the way over..... He went directly back to the hotel.
