  • Alex and our blue hire car - Miami Beach
Alex and our blue hire car

We hired a car for just one day during our visit to Miami, and didn't feel the need to have it for any longer than that. I guess if your holiday had been longer we may have wanted the car to explore more of Florida, but with only 4.5 days, there was plenty to do within walking distance.

After lots of research into car hire companies and prices etc we decided to go with the easy option and asked the concierge at our hotel to arrange the hire for us, which turned out to be with Thrifty Car Rental.

Thrifty delivered the car to our hotel in the morning, and collected it the following day. The price was competitive and the ease of the drop off/collection made it a breeze. We had a compact car (a Dodge Neon) which was just perfect for our day in the Everglades National Park.

Upon arrival in Miami, the two main ways to travel to your hotel is by taxi or shuttle service. Outside the arrivals hall you can pick up a taxi , and there was certainly a large number of them available when we arrived. There are flat rates depending on which part of Miami you are heading to - there was a large sticker on the window outlining the regions and rates. It was 32 USD (plus tip) for us to go to South Beach.

Many of the hotels also have airport shuttles, and you should be able to arrange for these in advance of your trip.

There is also a shared SuperShuttle service that you can pre-book, which costs around 15 USD per person and will drop you at your hotel.

I have also read about a free-shuttle bus that links up with the tri-rail station. From there you go a couple of stops and then get another train and I think a bus....I'd stick with a taxi if I were you!

On our trip to Miami, we flew direct from London Heathrow to Miami International Airport with British Airways. We chose British Airways as they flew direct, and the times of day of the flights fit in with our itinerary. There were also direct flights with Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines.

The flight from London to Miami was 9hours & 40mins. It was during the day, so we didn't really sleep, just watched a couple of movies and some of the other in-flight entertainment. On the way back to London, the flight was only 7hours & 40mins, and we were lucky enough to sleep most of the way as it was an overnight flight...in fact I was so exhausted (probably from all the eating we did on our holiday) that I fell asleep as soon as we had taken off.

Miami airport was quite nice, though there wasn't that much in the way of shopping/restaurants on the departures side which was a little disappointing.

  • Miami Beach is a very walkable city, but if you really or need or want to avoid walking (high heels will do that), you can definitely find taxis everywhere.

We used a taxi from our hotel to dinner since it was still raining a bit and we were all very hungry. We also used a taxi the morning of our departure to the airport. The ride was quick and cost about $35.

You can hail a taxi all over Miami Beach or right outside your hotel door. Be aware that Miami has implemented a fuel surcharge of $1.50 due to the high cost of gas.

Please take the time to discover this city by boat. There is literally no other way to see some of the amazing abodes ( yes stars homes included). Whether you start on the Surf side and go around the Harbour and into the Bay, a boat ride is necessary. Not only will you see great houses and modern-day palaces, but the chances that you'll see Dolphins and Mantees in the Bay is high. There are plenty of boats for hire in South Beach, and all are advertised in the citys several free newspapers, one of them being Street. Water Taxis also connect to South Beach, so if you don't have a group big enough to justify a half day charter then this is for you.

    Getting around South Beach

  • If you plan to just stay in South Beach, you really don't need any transportation at all, you can walk everywhere. The main area is only about a mile long.
However,if you have a lazy moment or it is raining , there is a bus( I believe if it called the Electricwave.but I am not 100% sure of the name) that will get you around South Beach for only a 25 cents. I was thinking of trying it out once just to see what it was like, but never got around to it. Besides just walking around South Beach is kind of fun!
I took the bus into the city of Miami a few times. Bus C and Bus K will take you to Bayside Marketplace and also to downtown. They run about every 15 minutes. The cost is $1.25 . If you would like to visit Villa Vizcaya and /or Coconut Grove ,take Bus C or Bus K and buy a 25 cent transfer., Get off at the Downtown bus station and transfer to bus 48. The only bad thing is that Bus 48 only runs about every hour, so you may have a wait.

  • There are several options to get to South Beach from the airport. The least expensive is the bus, but it also takes the longest and if you have alot of luggage, it can be cumbersome.,but it should probably only cost you a $1.50. The Clay Hotel website. www.clayhotel.com has the directions to do this.
There is the Supershuttle . It will cost $13 per person. www.supershuttle.com
I took a cab. The set fare to South Beach from the airport is $24 but this works out cheaper than the Supershuttle if there is more than one person traveling.

  • If you are staying in the South Beach area and fly into Miami International Airport, check with your hotel to see if there are free shuttles available from the airport to the hotel.

I found that most hotels (even the cheaper ones) offer free shuttle service from/to the airport. This could save you the cost of a rental - If you plan to stay and spend your time in South beach, a car isnt necessary. Walking will get you most places in South Beach and if needed, you can flag down a taxi.

Miami Beach is a relatively compact and flat area, which is best explored and enjoyed walking. Despite that, taxis are a very convenient transportation way, mainly because of the scarcity of parking areas and the unreliable (may I say inexistent?) public transport….

Taxis fares are not prohibitive and there are plenty of them. Enjoy your ride! ;-)

We arrived at Miami International Airport on American Airlines from NYC. The airport is under huge renovations and connecting to most gates can be a challenge.
