about a half mile north of micanopy is payne's prairie state preserve. the preserve offers hiking trails, camping, fishing, canoeing, and a boat ramp. on the one mile drive to the visitor center you drive through three distinct ecosystems, a cypress swamp, a pine and palmetto scrub, and oak highlands. the prairie is a grass marsh which is the habitat of alligators, bison, wild horses, and numerous bird species. a very interesting place to visit to view florida wildlife.
