    Palm Island Nature Preserve.

A short 1/4mi walk from downtown brings you to a park that is a world away from the mini bustle of Mt Dora, muchless the mega-bustle of Orlando 30mi away.

The Palm Island Boardwalk stretches a mile through marshes and tall grass out over the lake.

Its a rare day I dont see at least 3 alligators along this bank.

The cathedral at Palm Island Mt Dora

Where the walkway joins the island is a setting bench I call "the cathedral" because it feels like I am sitting in a pew looking up at the cathedral cieling formed by the criss-crossing limbs of the huge bald cypress trees looming 40 feet above me. Just a faint bit of sunlight peeks through the boughs like through stained glass.

I spend 100s of hours sitting here, running my lines in my early days as an actor.

To me its a holy place rivalling the great cathedrals of Europe.

    tranquilty in Mt Dora

My last walk here there were 2 alligators relaxing in the sun at the entrance to this cove. On the wooden walkway I shook hands with 2 real live Gators(alums of the Univ of Florida are called "gators") and we had a pleasant chat about Central Florida;-)

    Peacefull Sunset Island

Past the eagles nests, past the vultures, past the alligators, birds, lizards and turtles basking in the sun you come to Lake Dora where the walkway juts out into the water. This is a shot looking back toward the marina and the shoreline.

The whole town is 'OFF THE BEATEN PATH' as far as I'm concerned. The pace here is very slow. I wouldn't recommend it for young people or those looking for excitement and night life. However, it is enjoyable spending a few hours here to unwind and experience the 'Old Florida'.

The boardwalk in Mt Doras Sunset Island

This is me..walking away...into the deep dark mysterious jungle of Sunset Island.

Through the years I have walked here over 1,000 times. Its a GREAT place to meditate and just think.
