In 1882-83 a two-story wooden hotel known as the Alexander House was built on this site as a small getaway for fishing, birding and snake hunting
In 1895 it changed the name to the Lake House until 1903 and was was totally rebuilt in 1930. Two US presidents wintered here regularly.
Its a great place to sit in a rocker on its HUGE fron porch and watch the sunset. The Sunday brunch is a local favorite!
Great location on a back alley in the historic Mount Dora. Its a favorite haunt of the Icehouse Theater crowd.
It used to be a renovated warehouse and now has book-lined dining rooms, a private, tree shaded courtyard that is open year round.
There have even been famous actor sightings>
The son of Dr. C.R. Gilbert, left this property to the city in his will.
Adjacent to Gilbert Park is my favorite Mt Dora venue>Palm Island> replete with a large picnic pavilion, achildren's playground, its famous lighthouse, fishing dock, boat ramp, a small waterfall and one of the most beautiful nature walks in Florida.
This lighthouse guides many boats to Mt Doras shores. I, myself used it offen for reference at dusk when I was out sailing a bit too long and ran out of daylight.
Allegedly fueled by an inexplicable passion for the show 'Petticoat Junction', local entrepreneur/eccentric Steve Torrico opened the Dora Doodlebug about 5 years ago. A 1920's railway motor car that travels from Mount Dora to Tavares and back again along the shores of Lake Dora.
On day trips from the Mount Dora Railway, you can experience the comfort and heyday of an authentic railroad passenger car on The Mount Dora Limited.
Not long ago the train went all the way to Orlando and back. May again soon.
Donnelly Park originally cost $45,000 and was given to the city by J.P. Donnelly in 1924 in honor of his wife.
In later years shuffleboard courts were installed by the Mt Dora Shuffleboard Club and the early 1060s grew to 22 courts that dominated the main the four corners. Thats how laid back Mt Dora used to be.
Today there are about half as many courts and a beautifull community building has been built complete with a rear deck used as a stage are where the Icehouse Theater often does open air productions where family and friends spread blankets on the slope on perfect fall nights.
Ive done over 30 plays at the Icehouse and 3 Shakespeare Donnelly Park plays as well as selected South Pacific vignettes in my early days as an actor.
ThE house was built in 1893 by John Phillip Donnelly for his wife. It a Queen Anne style, with an octagonal turret and wraparound porch.
This home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
This is a full service marina right on Lake Dora.
Lake Dora connects to the Dora Canal and to Lake Eustis and you can actually go through a series of lakes and canals and the St. Johns River from here to get to the Atlantic Ocean....
This place has a boardwalk that goes along the lake and views of some really outstanding cypress, birds and the occasional gator of course....We saw a bird eating a snake. I never knew birds ate snakes before.
This is a tiny (literally) gallery which boasts different exhibits at all times. This is not like an art museum. It is basically one tiny room, with revolving exhibits. There are no pieces of art that remain at all times. It's staffed completely by volunteers, who are the friendliest people I have ever met.
When I went, the exhibit was by a local Florida artist that captured visual imagery through short motion pictures. There were 4 stations set up in the gallery, and each let you experience the exhibit fully. It took abotu 30 minutes to get through it and was very unique.
This festival is held annually in February. It is a nationally ranked arts festival that attracts over 300 artists from around the world. The downtown area is packed with exhibits, fun and games, live music, and food stalls.
I attended this event in 2005, and was completely amazed. This is the place to be when the festival is being held. It was extremely crowded, but everyone was friendly and having a good time. It was very interesting to just walk around and hop in and out of the art stalls. The artists were always on hand to discuss their art or anything you felt like chatting about! Meeting the artist was sometimes the best part. The art ranged from photos, watercolors, etchings, wood carvings, blown glass, and hand made jewelry. Everything was for sale, but fairly expensive. I did end up buying a couple of large photos for around $30 a piece.
Parking is extremely limited downtown, but they do offer park and ride opportunities. It was very simple to park and hop a bus to the festival. It cost around $2 roundtrip, and saved a lot of headaches.
This is a great day of fun and sun! Contact information is for Mount Dora Center for the Arts, who put on the festival.
Mount Dora is known for it's antiques, galleries, and quaint shops. Downtown Mount Dora boasts numerous shopping opportunities for everyone. There are unique gift shops, art galleries, antique stores, and specialty stores.
You can spend a great day here just wandering around the downtown. The shops are all packed into the historic area. Park your car and start walking. This area is beautifully decorated at Christmas as well.
This is where I started, at the ICEHOUSE THEATER in Mt Dora Florida. Twelve theaters and 51 plays later it is still dear to my heart.
BEING A PERFORMER at the Icehouse has afforded me the opportunity to perfect my art. and in turn to see many different countries.
The quality level here is excellent and ticket prices affordable. Click on the website below to see what is playing now.

The Dora Canal connects Lake Dora and Lake Eustis and has some of the most interesting wildlife, flora and fauna. These are bald Cypress knees.
