    Inside Fort Myer Airport
    by deecat, 2 more photos
The airport at Fort Myers is a delight to fly in and out of...it is small, efficient, and attractive. When we flew in, it took very little time before we had our luggage on a cart and then walked a short distance to rent a car.

We checked our luggage "curb-side" both at O'Hare and at Fort Myers. The man at Fort Meyers was ever so helpful, making it an easy experience. Of course, paying $15.00 each for our first bag, and $25.00 each for our golf bags was not a pleasant experience.

When we were flying out of Fort Myers, it was just as easy. We ate at the airport, shopped in one of the shops for items for the grandchildren, and then were called to board our plane.

Be sure to see the three photographs of the Fort Myers Airport

Of course, having such delightful weather conditions always makes an airport much more desirable!

Southwest Florida International Airport (Ft. Myers) is about an hour's drive north of Naples, and probably your best bet for catching a commercial flight to the general vicinity. Many major airlines fly in to SFIA, including those listed at this link: Airlines At SFIA
There are plenty of car rental agencies conveniently located for pickup/return at the airport. See link below for more specific information.

There is also an airport shuttle service that runs by reservation from RSW to Naples or any other SW Florida destination: Naples Airport Shuttle

  • We've found that flying into Ft. Myers then driving to Naples (the most common way to get there) is kind of expensive. This year we're going to fly to Tampa on Soutwest and drive from there (about 3 hrs.) We were able to get a special fare and saved a lot of money that way!

For direct commercial flights into Naples Airport, (airport code APF), as far as I know Delta Airlines' flights out of Atlanta are the only options. But you may be able to get on a charter flight with one of the small charter outfits listed here that utilize the airfield:
    Naples charter airlines

I've never checked into it for myself, since I always rent a car & drive in from Ft. Myers RSW, Miami MIA, Orlando MCO or Tampa TPA.

For any other questions you may have, the link for the airport is listed below.

  • Our Rental Car for our month in Naples, Florida - Naples
Our Rental Car for our month
    in Naples, Florida
    by deecat
When we made our plans to spend a month in Naples, Florida, we knew that we needed to rent a car for the month. We had stayed in Bonita Beach and in Bonita Springs [very near to Naples] in other winters; thus, we knew a car was a MUST.

We checked prices for a month by going to several different rental companies. Because we received a 10% discount via RCI, we decided to use Avis Car Rental.

We picked up the car[ a gray four-door Hyundai Sonata] at Ft. Myers, Florida Airport. We ended up paying $33.30 per day or $233.10 per week or $702.00 per Month. We had unlimited mileage and had to bring the car back with a full tank of gas.

Although it is annoying for all rentals, we had to pay $0.47/day energy recovery fee; a 11.11% concession recovery fee; tax was 6.000%. Even more disturbing is the fee of $2.00 a day for Florida Sur Charge; $1.00 CFC; .03/a day for wast Battery fee; .60/a day Vehicle license fee recovery.

Oh, my, that all adds up to $961.10 for 31 days. Do you realize that of that amount, $259.10 were for all those extra charges.

The Trolley meanders all over the town of Naples, giving you a 2 hour narrated tour of the area that is comprehensive & fun. It's a great way to see what's what & get oriented to the interesting locales.

Officially, the tour begins at 6th Avenue South and 10th Street South, but you can pick it up at any of the marked Trolley stops in town. Maps are available at the website listed below, and printed copies are available all over town (including at the Chamber of Commerce).

However, because it does a 2-hour circuitous route & costs about $16-20 pp for adults, it isn't really a viable means of transportation in general. Once you've bought a pass, it's good for the whole day, & you can get on & off as you please - just be sure you don't miss the last one leaving your stop to get back to the point of origin!

You can do a guided 1/2 day bicycle excursion into the Everglades with Everglades Bicycle Tours, located at 6003 Green Blvd in Naples proper. It's a great way to cover a lot of territory, yet be able to slow down and really see the sights. Just be sure you know your own capabilities & take lots of water along in case you get dehydrated in the heat.
I'd recommend starting in the early morning for this trip.
