a section of santa rosa island between navarre beach and pensacola beach is part of the gulf islands national seashore. this federally protected area is open to the public for swimming and fishing. this section of santa rosa county was hit by hurricane ivan in 2004, hurricanes dennis and katrina in 2005 and by hurricane gustav in 2008. as a result this area has a "lunar" look to it. many of the sand dunes and whole pine forests were washed away by these hurricanes and now this area is covered with white sand. a very interesting part of northwest florida to visit.

A big attraction of Navarre Beach is the beach with the white sand. People compare the sand to sugar, but since we were there in the winter, it reminded us of snow.
Although the websites say that the beaches have been cleared of debris, and there seem to be toilets available there doesn't seem to be any place to stay out there and I'm not sure about the water supply.
