    Horse Farm Tour

by davecallahan Written Feb 25, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You are in the heart of Florida horse country where there are horse farms down every secondary road. So, of course, you must take a horse farm tour.
From the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage (or for larger groups, a trolley), you can view the beautiful country side and see the horses run free in the field and listen to the driver spiel about the history of the horse industry in Ocala. (Or you can just get in your car and drive down the secondary roads at 10mph and for a lot less money).

Probably okay for a once-in-a-lifetime event, but a bit pricey for run-of-the-mill tourists like us.

    Canoeing at Alexander Springs

There are quite a variety of Spring runs to canoe in the Ocala National Forest, and I'm going to try and do all of them. Alexander Springs is beautiful...the water is clear and it's a lot more open than the meandering path of Juniper Springs. There are a lot of water hyacinths along with the wildlife. It is also one of Florida's 27 first-magnitude springs.

Never have I seen a more beautiful place to paddle than Juniper Springs. We saw a monkey, a bear, turtles, fish, birds and a racoon. There were many warnings about gators but we never saw one.
There is a 4 dollar entrance fee to get into the park. Canoes cost 31.50 to rent. You go for 7 miles till the end, then a van picks you and the canoe up and takes you back to your car. GO HERE!!!! you will NOT regret it!!!

    Visit a classic car museum

Ten miles south of Ocala, just off of Interstate 75, you will find the Garlits Museums. One is mostly "Drag Racing" cars and is known as the IHRA hall of fame. Here you will find on display perhaps 150 of these machines dating back to the beginnings of the sport in the late 40s. It is a wonderful museum however the collection, perhaps the best of its type in the world, is of limited interest to those who are not fans of motor sports. The other museum the Antique Museum is more varied and has some neat suprises that one would not expect to find in a car museum. There are stair treads from the 1936 Worlds Fair used as table tops, there is a bicycle with wooden wheels that is still operable, there is a mock up of an old garage with a crank phone on the wall that actually works. There is one of the best collections of "flat head" Fords outside of the Ford Museum in Greenfield Village. The best part of the display is the memories that these old cars bring back, many of us especally the Americans were concieved in the back seat of cars like these. If you like Rock music the way we heard it in the 50s be sure to drop a quarter in the Juke box and fell free to dance to the music. There is a charge for this attraction but it is nominal and well worth the investment. Buccaneer Bill

The rolling hills walled this amazing place, where you can experience the most quiet moment of your whole life-as the green grass danced graciously with the paso finos and rare breeds of horses..

A tranquil moment - while watching the flow of the "underground river" of the silver spring..
