Tusker House in Animal Kingdom by starship The Animal Kingdom is Walt Disney World's newest park and is much different from the other 3 parks. It is much larger than it seems and is divided into at least 6 distinct areas. My favorites are the "Africa" and "Asia" sections. Once you pass through the park's entrance, go straight to Discovery Island and then take the left bridge which puts you into the African Village of Harambe, and Disney has done an excellent job of making all the buildings there appear to be in just such a village. Cast members are dressed in African-like garb, African music and performers are part of the street scene. Shops sell crafts & items made in Africa (and of course there are Disney souvenirs too) which are really attractive and unique. So it is quite fitting that the quick service restaurant, the Tusker House, appears to be just what you think it might look like in some part of Africa. The inside will keep you in that African frame of mind and it is a nice place to get out of the sun and cool off, get lunch or an early dinner (the park always closes early). The menu is a nice one for a quick service place---no burgers! It's not exactly an African menu but a very nice change. Prices run from $6.99 for the Tusker House Chicken Salad with balsamic dressing to $7.99 for grilled salmon with Jollof rice and veggies. The half rotisserie chicken with garlic mashed potatoes is also $7.99 Other choices are turkey wraps, veggie sandwiches, etc. Wash it down with a Safari Amber for $5.75 but soft drinks, juices, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk and bottled water are always available. Don't forget dessert!! Children 3-9 can have a choice of chicken with mashed potatoes & applesauce or macaroni & cheese with apple sauce & Mickey cheddar crackers for $3.99. A soft drink, milk or juice is included in the price for children. Not bad at all for what you get!!
I have to go with the rotisserie chicken with garlic mashed potatoes as my favorite! But my husband really likes the salmon dish and that Safari Amber!! If you like a later breakfast, Tusker House serves that as well although the choices are somewhat limited. If you've got an appetite, try the scrambled eggs with home fries, biscuits and sausage/bacon ($5.29); if you want a little something try the gravy & biscuits (yummm!); yogurt with fruit; cereal; cinnamon rolls; muffins; Danish or a combination of several. This is a good way to get into the park early, see the animals first and then stop for something to eat! Leave a Comment

The Rainforest Cafe is located at either Downtown Disney, or at Animal Kingdom. We didn't eat at the AK one, but the DTD was fantastic....we ate there 3 times! I've never been to anywhere like this - the theming inside is so impressive. There's a waterfall, huge tropical fish aquarium which runs through the centre, swining monkies, huge elephants.....it's like being in the jungle! Every so often it would 'thunder' or 'rain' - extremely impressive & I could tell children of all ages loved it.......never mind the children though.....it's impressive whatever your age! If you're eating at the DTD one, make sure you go up first to ask if there's a wait for a table. We weren't allowed to make a reservation, but each time we arrived, there was a 45 minute wait - it wasn't a problem because we just looked round the shops - but best to check first!
I had the turkey wrap each time which was absolutely delicious! It came with turkey, ham, cheese, lots of salad, then I had it with fries. We also had a 'Volcano' dessert to share after on 1 of our visits - sooooooooo delicious! And then definitely make a scene when they bring it out - not one for people who are shy about what they eat, lol. When you want a steak you will never forget, ask anybody in Orlando, and they will say "Vitos"! Not only does Vitos have steak, but it has a great selection of seafood, great salads and savory, Italian entrees. The restaurant also holds a wide variety of over 1,000 wine labels, to accompany your main course. There is a warm embiance that surrounds you, with smooth, jazz mob hits of yesterday, that whisper in your ear. If you can save room for dessert, I would be surprised, after the generous proportions you received for dinner. I highly recommend that you make reservations in advance to get a seat, because when there are conventions, you could end up waiting for 2 hours to get a table.
I always get the linguine and meatballs for my dish. I can never finish one meatball! Since I can never finish dinner, and I can't resist the chocolate cake, I always get it to go. The piece of cake you get to go, is enough to feed 4 people! Great BBQ! by starship (Many pictures to follow but for some reason they won't upload!??!) My very favorite place to eat in the Animal Kingdom Park is the "Flame Tree Barbecue"!! Their dry-rub, spicy seasoned ribs are the BEST! I get the rib platter every time we visit there. The Flame Tree also has pulled-pork BBQ sandwiches; roasted, sliced turkey sandwiches; chicken; side dishes and desserts too. On our October 2006 visit we were on the Disney meal plan (see other tips and intro) --this meal is counted as a quick-service meal which covered whatever platter you chose plus drinks and dessert. Had we not been on the Disney meal plan, the tab for this lunch would have come to about $60 for the 4 of us! A hefty price to be sure, but worth it in my opinion. Each individual rib or sandwich platter is under $10 per person, but of course the drinks and dessert run the price up several dollars more. My rib meal was so delicious and it came with baked beans, corn on the cob, cole slaw and for dessert I chose the key lime pie. Everyone in my family enjoyed their meal too! No wonder we keep returning!
Although I have been consciously trying to stay away from meat dishes more often, I love coming to the Flame Tree Barbecue and I love the rib platter!! But on top of that, this little "take-out" place has the most scenic seating area and I love that just as much as the meal! You can walk down to several different levels of seating areas, all covered by uniquely carved & painted pavilions, surrounding by pools, lush tropical plants & trees, or the lake. It's not uncommon at all to see ducks, a large white heron or other wading birds at the water's edge. The views across the lake are spectacular! From most of the seating areas you have a fantastic view of "Expedition Everest," and some other rather cool sights. You've just got to see it for yourself! by starship If it hadn't been for a bad bee sting I got while visiting the Lodge, Jiko was definitely on my list of new places to try for dinner! The deep earthtone colors and decor of the restaurant certainly were enticing! Making advance reservations is advised.
The restaurant features "new" African cuising and serves South African wines which I find are very good. Leave a Comment Theme: AfricanPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: On the lower level, Animal Kingdom LodgePhone: 407- 939-3463 (WDW-DINE)

Joe's Bahama Mama, coconut shrimp, blackened ahi by jessicadf The first night we were there, it became obvious that finding a really GREAT restaurant would be a challenge, and finding a place that wasn't part of a restaurant chain, nearly impossible. Even though there's a Joe's Crab Shack at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco (where I wouldn't go), we decided to go anyway. We were really pleasantly surprised by a fun atmosphere, really, really friendly and attentive service and very good food. Yes, quite touristy, but yes, very tasty.
The coconut shrimp that Mark got were DELICIOUS, but I opted for grilled food. I had the grilled scallop, ahi tuna and prawn skewers with rice and veggies. Very, very yummy! Though the scallops were wrapped in bacon, which was too salty for me and I just took off. We had a shrimp dip (an artichoke/spinach/cheeze and shrimp hot dip) that was really, really, really yummy. Cajun seafood alfredo by jessicadf While part of a chain of restaurants across Florida, this felt like a place that locals would actually frequent. There must have been 50 televisions in this place, each showing some sporting event. It was Sunday evening, so there was a lot of football around us, and lots of friendly locals, excited about the games. Drinks wise, they had good prices on beer, and they had a promotion for $2 Skyy vodka cocktails. The food we had was very good, and the servings larger than we could finish. If we had a refrigerator or microwave back at the hotel, we would have taken away doggie bags.
I really enjoyed the linguini with prawns, grilled chicken, veggies and cajun alfredo sauce. Mark really enjoyed his chicken philly sandwich though there was more bread than he wanted so he just ate the insides. Their conch chowder was tasty and spicy. Leave a Comment

Waffle House! by jessicadf When I think of breakfast in the South, I think of Waffle House. For those that don't know about it, you can find these restaurants all over the South. They always look the same and have the same atmosphere and menus. They are known for their waffles, of course, but also for their hashbrowns. Mark is a nut for hashbrowns, so as soon as we drove by this Waffle House, I knew where I'd have to take him for breakfast. By the way - don't expect anything healthy, such as wheat bread - here. You'll find waffles, white bread, hash browns, eggs, grits and the like here.
Hashbrowns! Scattered (on the grill), covered (with onions), smothered (with cheese) and peppered (with jalapenos). When you see the menu, you'll understand. Leave a Comment

Patrick and I enjoying some beverages. by moiraistyx, 4 more photos This was my very first Planet Hollywood experience and I have to say that I absolutely had a great time. Patrick and I enjoyed walking around the restaurant viewing all the different exhibits that were on display. Rich was thrilled because they had part of a scene from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. As for the food well it was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed an order of crab cakes which were served with sautéed vegetables and home made mashed potatoes. I followed up my meal with the brownie dessert. To drink I had a frozen raspberry margarita. Richie had the chicken fajitas with a bowl of vanilla ice cream and to drink a traditional frozen margarita. All the children had chicken nuggets and french fries as their meal. Our wait staff was really friendly and helpful in keeping us within our dining plan. We did have a good laugh when one of our wait staff tried to serve our desserts to another table. Overall we all loved this place and will definitely pay it a visit on our next trip. This place gets busy really fast, I highly suggest that you make reservations ahead of time. HOURS OF OPERATION: Restaurant : 11am - 1am Bar: 11am - 2am Merchandise Shop: 10:00am - 2am
The crab cakes were extra yummy and the tarter sauce they served along with them seemed to have a bit of an extra kick to it, I think it may have had a dash of horse radish in it.

Wow! Where do I start? Patty had always wanted to visit this restaurant so she made reservations for our last night in Orlando at "Boma". Coupling American cuisine with Afrifican Cuisine this place is a 5 star in my book. Yes it is a buffet and no it is not like "Hometown Buffet or Souplantation" It is a bit pricey but we did not mind as the dining experience is one I can say I truly enjoyed and would return to again. When we checked in the hostess immediately asked if any of us had food allergies, I told her I am allergic to mushrooms which she noted on our check. When we were seated and the waiter came to our table he told me the chef would be out promptly to escort me through the food line so I would know what dishes to avoid! The chef did just that and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and tried some of the South African dishes without worry. The whole ambiance of the restaurant was just lovely, the larger tables could seat a very large party of 10 people so make sure you make a reservation no matter how big your party is. Frankly I would not have recommended this restaurant for those with kids until I saw peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and other types of "kid friendly" foods. It seems the chefs thought of everything!
The food was diverse, well prepared and plentiful. The Coca-cola pork loin was tender and flavorful, the "Girlie rice" made with saffron and raisins was a teensy bit dry but tasty. There were pepper pot soup, butternut squash soup which was really like eating pumpkin pie with salads and a dessert bar that we literally tried everything there. My favorite was a bon bon type of treat made with amarula a drink native to South Africa. Everything was labeld so parents would know if the dessert was made with alcohol or not. Leave a Comment
