Panama City Beach Things to Do

  • Shell Island

I picked this park to visit because it was close. The fact that it was named by Dr. Beach (Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman) as America¿s Best Beach in 1995 didn't really matter to us as it was January and cold. At other seasons this might be a selling point for the park which s 1,260-acre park is located on a peninsula with over 1.5 miles of beach on the...

  • Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum

I remember old Believe It Or Not cartoons or other print media or radio items when I was growing up. I haven't visited this particular museum and have generally avoided going to these museums when I see them. There is one in Key West, and in Branson which I also have not been to. I have been to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg TNWe...

  • White Sand Beaches

All along this section of the coast there are sparkling white sand beaches. In the winter when we were there, this made me think that there was snow. But it isn't snow, it is sand. Panama City Beach advertises their beaches as The best beach this side of paradise...Panama City Beach Florida beaches have been honored with numerous beach awards...

Panama City Beach Restaurants

  • Good Seafood and Beer

Do not listen to the Panama City Beach Guide input on Dusty's. It says "Home of warm beer, lousy food, ugly waitresses and the two-time U. S. National Oyster Shucking Champion". Only the last part is true. The beer is cold, the food very good and the waitresses kinda cute. Lots of wood inside and dollar bills left by customers adorn the walls and...

  • We All Scream for Ice Cream

The Pink Pelican is located in a non-descript strip mall with a crazy parking lot; but is well worth seeking out when you want some great ice cream. The Pink Pelican even made a list of best ice cream in the Huffington Post. A bit more expensive than most ice cream parlors but quite tasty. One scoop is packed and about the same as two scoops in...

  • Great Home Cooking; Friendly Staff

Mike's has a menu of southern style home cooking (like homemade meatloaf with greens and black eyed peas) along with fresh seafood. I had breakfast there with one of my cousins and tried their seafood omelet. It was excellent with fish, shrimp and scallops with Swiss cheese and a hollandaise sauce. My cousin is a regular here and was greeted with...

Panama City Beach Nightlife

  • Dance on the Bar

Dance on the bar with the hot waitresses, drink beer or shots of Jagermeister, shoot pool, this is a fun place to spend the evening. Hours are 4 PM to 4 AM daily. Very casual. Ripped clothing is the norm for the waitresses.

  • Live Music at a Famous Honkytonk

Tootsie's Orchid Lounge is located just across the street from Hofbrau and on the Friday Night I was there it had live music. The band was pretty good and played Southern Rock. Lots of photos of musicians, bands, and customers on the walls. Small dance floor. Several beers and mixed drinks available. This is a spinoff of the famous Tootsie's in...

  • Free Beer

On Friday nights they open a keg and as long as it lasts the beer is free. The waitresses dress in traditional German outfits and there was a cute blonde playing the accordion. Inside looks like a traditional German beer hall (as a matter of fact the tables and benches came from the original Munchner Hofbrauhaus) and there is outdoor seating too....

  • Getting around in Panama City Beach

While in PCB, during mid-day, driving by car, you will want that air conditioner full blast. In July: In the morning before 10am or the evening after 7 or 8pm, you might enjoy walking to where you need to go, if you are on Front Beach Rd.They have motorbike rentals, which can be fun to do anytime of the day. You will see a lot of friends in groups...

  • Right now, I would have to fly...

Right now, I would have to fly out there, because I live in Colorado. I just looked it up on the Internet to get a refresher of what the road numbers were, and it looks like they have made some changes to the roads. It shows 353 miles from Dalton, GA. With a avg speed of 52mph, you can get there in just under 7 hours. Just for your own convienence,...

Panama City Beach Shopping

  • Safe Sex

I have not been in this store, but I could not resist taking a picture of it.The owner's website says that this is a store for safe sex. This is the second store by this name in the Panama City area, so it is known as CK2. The original store is at 7510-A Thomas Dr. Panama City Beach, Fl T-shirts, gag gift, lotions, oils, regular, flavored and...

  • Alvin's

Alvin's is a major tourist shop that can be found twice on Front Beach Rd(one might be on Thomas drive). There is a two story one and then there is a smaller one a few miles up the road. I highly recommend going to either of these shops because there are a lot of neat things in here. This is also where you can get some extra beach wear, so that you...

Panama City Beach Local Customs

  • Buy FRESH local Seafood

If you are staying in Panama City and have the ability to cook in your accomodations, stop by a local market and pick up some fresh local seafood. We've been going to Shrimp City for years now. They offer a variety of fresh shrimp and fish along with alligator and frozen Crab Legs. If you want, they'll steam them for you free. The prices here are...

  • Tipping

Living in PCB for 22 years, I've realized that old Canadians DO NOT TIP at restaurants! This is one of the most insulting thing you can do to someone who works for less than 1/2 of minimum wage. If you want to leave a good impression for the locals, tip your waiter/waitress and barmen.

  • Local information

Unlike the majority of Florida, the northwest panhandle of Florida resides in the central time zone! Climate: Average temperatures are Jan 62/40, April 76/58F, July 87/73F, October 83/66.

Panama City Beach Warnings and Dangers

  • Beach Swimming Precaution...

Beach Warning! The rip currents along the beach can be very strong at times. Many people drown each year fighting them. If you get pulled under, swim along with the flow of the current and work your way closer to shore as the current weakens. DON'T FIGHT THE CURRENT!! If you see red flags along the beach, stay out of the water for your own safety!

  • Traffic is ghastly in season.

Because there are only one or two main roads on the beach, expect traffic to be at a near standstill at times. Mostly it is a tedious creeping drive from one end of the beach to the other, especially around the strip. To compound this problem, you will also have to watch out for every drunken college kid and spring breaker who is likely to dart in...

  • Only that I can think of is to...

Only that I can think of is to put valuables, things that you don't want stolen into your trunk. Example.......radar detector. I took it up to the room so that no one would take it from the car. Seem to be a favorite to steal. This made the second one that got stolen. Anyway, I took it to the room to keep it out of the car, and when it came time to...

Panama City Beach Tourist Traps

  • Panama City Beach Parkway

As soon as you come into PCB the speed limit goes from 55 to 45. At the base of the 45 mph sign is a PIG holding a radar gun. How any POS Cop can justify this is beyond me. I spent $200 before I even got to the crummy, seaweed stricken, trash laden, poor excuse for a beach. It ruined my whole trip and I will NOT be back. I guess once you have ran...

  • dont waste your money going to panama...

This place looks like it is going downhill in a hurryit is very rundown looking nothing to do that is funbut mini golf and ripleys and some upside down housethat is over priced and very boring places to go.Seems seedy - don't leave your kids unattended !Those that go here for springbreak must haveparents that don't check out where their kids are...

  • Pineapple Willy's - You get only one...

Just an FYI - If you enjoy drinking what we all consider "refillable" drinks by any standards with your meal, make sure you hydrate yourself pretty well before dining at Willy's. You only get 1 refill on a regular cup unless you buy their 16oz mug for $4 (which includes unlimited refills).

Panama City Beach What to Pack

  • I always bring...

You will not need to many bags. Just 1 or 2 suit cases. Remember...Unless you stay at a fancy hotel, you will have to take you own bag to your room so don't make it to heavy. You'll need a swim suit, of coarse, and some sandals and flip flops for the beach (the sand gets hot), A couple of nice outfits to go out in. Nice, but comfortable enough to...

  • Packing List

I usually go the last of June, or the 2nd or 3rd week of July. So if you are going around this time. Bring your normal beach wear. Keep in mind that you will want to dress up to go out, and also keep in mind that when you go to a restaurant they will have the air conditioner on, and if you got sunburnt that day, you will be cold. Not cold enough...

  • Packing List

Don't take much luggage. Everything you need you'll be able to buy in local supermarket Walmart. If you go from Europe during your summer vacations, just don't take much clothes. weather there is very hot, so take just some t-shirts, shorts, skirts and of course bikini! :) Water is very warm. You can buy photo equipment in Walmart, and it is...

  • Oakland Cemetery

I decided to visit some cemeteries in Panama City proper to take photos for some people that wanted pictures of their relatives' stones (I belong to a volunteer group that documents cemeteries). So I called Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery (photo 4) where some of them were and got directions. This was a big huge cemetery and a lot of the stones were...

  • Camp Helen State Park

We took a couple of day trips to Florida State parks. In addition to St Joseph we went to Camp Helen and Eden House GardensFrom 1945 until 1987 Camp Helen was a company resort for the employees of an Alabama textile mill. Some of those buildings have now been restored. There was a lodge and little cabins, a camp kitchen and stables. But the main...

Panama City Beach Sports & Outdoors

  • MatthewMetcalfe's Profile Photo

by MatthewMetcalfe Written Aug 19, 2004

Vortex Springs is a natural Spring 45 minutes north of Panama City in Ponce De Leon Florida. Aside from being a great dive training site, the water is clear and offers the cave diver a new cave to explore.

For those who are training, there's a dive bell and man made caves to train in as well as platforms for learning.

Equipment: The water is a cool 72 year round. I wore a 3 mil shorty over a 3 mil full suit with gloves and was still a little cold. I recommend a hood as well.

Panama City Beach Favorites

  • Ahhh...the beach!

Being from the East Coast, where going to the "beach" meant Ocean City, Maryland or Cape May, NJ, the water of the Gulf of Mexico was nice. Otherwise, this is your typical "party" beach spot, which isn't really my thing. Down the road a bit from Panama City are also a bunch of outlets, for those who are interested in shopping.

  • Beach and palms

Panama City Beach is the most popular family vacation destination in the Panhandle - and the beaches are superb.

  • When visiting Panama City...

When visiting Panama City Beach, FL you absolutely must visit everything possible and do everything possible. There is so much to do. I made sure everytime I went on vacation here, I ate at Sharkies(great shark meat), go to St. Andrews State Park(snorkling, surfing on a body board(you can get these at Wal-mart), Alvin's(a must for the shoppers),...
