Annual Weiner Dog Races!
Every year in Pensacola, they have the annual weiner dog races to raise money for the Dachsund Rescue Foundation. Dachshund owners from around the area show up to drag race their dogs in various heats based off weight class. Some race well, others veer off the course a little, others never leave the starting blocks.
Prizes and food are all provided by donations. Local sponsors get together to give away grab bags and treats for guests and competitors.
Great fun for an afternoon. Bring your dog!
Annual Race Days vary: check the web often.
Track is located @ 9221 South Loop Road, Pensacola, FL

- Road Trip
This is way off the beaten path. I have it listed under Panama City, but I think it could be listed here too.
Rosemary Beach is about 100 miles from Pensacola on the Emerald Coast. It is a nice drive if there is not too much traffic. Rosemary Beach is a very upscale planned community, which I think is beautiful. I think it is worth the trip.

Pensacola Light 1858
I saw a brochure for The Lighthouse Point Restaurant, and asked the Visitor's Center on the island east of Fort Walton Beach and was told that it was just a replica. But, that was wrong.
This was the first lighthouse on the Florida Gulf Coast. It is on a site one half mile west of the original lighthouse and stands as the back of the range which marks the only entrance into Pensacola harbor. The lighthouse is on the Naval Air Station just past the big Air Museum. Getting onto the base requires showing an ID but isn't difficult.
During the Civil War the Fresnel lens which was made in Paris by Henri LaPaite was taken out of the tower for safekeeping. It has been reinstalled in the lighthouse which is still a working aid to navigation. The lightkeeper's house was built in 1869 and the light was electrified in 1939 and automated in 1965. The light can be seen for 27 miles..
Weather permitting, tours are given on Sundays from May to September between 12 and 3:30 pm. We visited in December, so of course we couldn't go on a tour. Visitors must climb 177 steps and I wouldn't have wanted to do that anyway. Children under 6 years of age are not permited in the tower.
According to the Friends of Pensacola Light: From Highway 90 in Pensacola, turn south on Highway 295 (New Warrington Road and Navy Boulevard), and follow it for three miles. SR 295 leads to the main gate of the Pensacola Naval Air Station, but visitors must now use a different entrance.
This was incorrect in December 2005. We went to the Naval Air Museum, and the lighthouse is just past that. There are two sides to the entrance into NAS Pensacola - one side for those with base stickers, and one side for visitors.
Unfortunately, the restaurant was not open when we were there. It is open to the public though, and I've given the phone number. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Reservations for individuals, groups and tour buses are accepted.
- Sailing and Boating
This is a a really cute town on Mobile Bay. There are some pretty neighborhoods to drive around, antique stores to poke through, a couple of rather fashionable boutiques where Fairhope ladies buy their Mardi Gras finery, and my favorite of all, Sandra's Place, 218 Fairhope Avenue, where you can get good homemade soups, salads and sandwiches, a glass of iced tea, and for desert, a piece of their wonderful homemade cake. Tel: 251-990-3344.
To get there from Pensacola, you can take the back roads, going through Foley for the scenic country drive and return via Route 10. According to Map Quest, it should take about an hour if you take Route 10.

Something that my kids enjoy doing is taking the boat out and going tubing. This is something that I have not tried but it really looks like fun. In the picture my daughter Jennifer is having a good time.
Shorebirds At Wayside
This is a park that is on Pensacola Bay and some of the birds that live there. I think that there are few places that have the natural beauty of this area. On the bay they reconstituting the oyster reefs along the Bay. This will promote the cleaning of the waters in this area. Some of my favorite times are watching the pelicans as they feed in the area.
