  • Jonny Chonga's Burger & Burrito Co.: Interesting New Concept on Powerline Road

by alhorblitt Written Mar 3, 2012

In a very interesting, out-of-the-way location is a new restaurant concept in South Florida: Burgers AND Burritos under one roof. Just South of Copans Road in the very industrial heart of Powerline Road is Jonny Chonga's Burger & Burrito Co.

The decor is artistic and minimal. The seating is open and comfortable--with options to sit at tables, bring a group and push the tables together, high-top style seating for a quick bite on the go and even a living room with couches to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee with their free wi-fi. Their bathroom is far away from any sitting arrangement, which is a plus, and no table is too close to a heavy traffic area or entrance/exit.

The staff is knowledgeable about the food and products offered and generally accommodating, however they do advertise on the menu that any item can only be modified through subtraction, not adding additional items to their creations.

The biggest bonus is that Jonny Chonga's has a rather large delivery radius encompassing most of Pompano Beach, Deerfield, Coconut Creek, Parts of Fort Lauderdale--and their fresh Mexican food and Burgers travel pretty well. The delivery minimum is only $7 and they start delivering around 7 am...great if you're craving a double espresso and breakfast burrito in bed or as soon as you walk into the office.

I have been checking their twitter and foursquare as they've been offering discounts and specials pretty frequently--lets hope that continues, too!

Favorite Dish: I love the Bistro Style Burger & the Burrito Burger. The Jonny Chonga Burger looks AWESOME but I would definitely need a small family to share it with!

    Sea Watch: Great Seafood

by rdywenur Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I ate at this restaurant on my birthday. A window seat ovelooking the ocean. Very romantic restaurant. Service was great , most important was the food..excellent.

Favorite Dish: I had the Garlic Shrimp ($$22.00) Excellent choice. Came with a salad, choice of potato and vegetables (al dente to pefection). Great coffee too (I always judge my restaurants by their coffee...if they can't make good coffee the food probably isn't all that great either)

calypso raw bar and restaurant: terrific caribbean food!

by susiemargare Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

i loved this small restaurant that focuses on caribbean/jamaican/west indies food. it has tables and a bar. there is a very large selection of beer (draft beer $2). sandwiches are about $10, other entrées are about $20. coffee is $2, key lime pie is $4.

open 11 am to 10 pm, tuesday thru sunday. very casual.

Favorite Dish: i had the west indies barbecued shrimp, which i would not hesitate to order again and again! eight medium-size shrimp were drenched in a spicy dark buttery sauce. this was plenty to fill me up, esp because it came with a simple but fresh dinner salad (the ginger dressing is excellent) and two sides. the barbecue sauce was so good and interesting that i dipped my steak fries in it.

this restaurant has gotten many outstanding reviews, and it deserves every word. do not miss!

    houston's: on the water

    houston's

houston's is a national chain restaurant that serves moderately priced american fare. houston's is an above average chain restaurant. what makes this location unique is that houston's has a patio with a great view of the intercoastal waterway. a fun place to eat and drink and watch the yachts go by on the intercoastal.

    cafe maxx

darrel & oliver's cafe maxx is an excellent restaurant and bar on atlantic ave. in pompano beach. this eclectic gourmet restaurant offers interesting steak, seafood dishes, and very good salads. don't be fooled by their humble outside appearance and their location in unassuming strip center. this is one of the better restaurnats in south florida. cafe maxx is a florida trend golden spoon winner.

  • Gianni's: Do yourself a favor; go to Macaroni Grill instead

by Sevenwordedman Written Aug 9, 2007

Gianni’s attempts to pass as fine dining experience and fails miserably. As a patron of eateries that cater to the upper echelon of the restaurant society, I have dined at numerous like modeled establishments on both coasts. Gianni’s has all the makings of a great dining experience; that is until you are seated. The restaurant itself is poorly setup and tables are arranged so that you are either in your neighbors lap or in a direct path of high traffic. The staff is knowledgeable about the cuisine and the wine list but harbor a visible and appalling disdain for anyone under the age of thirty, not dressed in their best suit or any patron they perceive at a glance to be of a lower social class. The service is slow and on a busy night, don’t even think about getting that water with lemon you asked for in a timely manner. And the food is...nothing special. I’ve had lasagna delivered by my neighborhood pizza place that sports a strikingly similar tasting meat sauce. The house dressing is ho-hum, the desert selection uninspired and the same wine can be found at places like the Macaroni Grill or Olive Garden. If all this wasn’t enough, the last time I dined at Gianni’s a waiter spilled an entire tray of blistering hot pasta all over my fiancés head and neck! The complete lack of acknowledgement from the managerial staff to this plight was the last straw. As my fiancé sat wiping sauce from her sweater in complete embarrassment with half of the restaurant looking and a patron at another table dashed off to get ice from the kitchen, the staff continued to seat other customers as if nothing at all had occurred. Do yourself a favor, avoid the attitude, aggravation and average cuisine and go to Macaroni Grill instead. The food and service will be better and if you get bored waiting for that water with lemon, at least there you can draw on the tables.

Favorite Dish: I would not recomend anything

flanigan's/piranha pat's seafood bar and grill: don't waste your time

by susiemargare Updated Jun 23, 2006

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

normally i do not write negative reviews (i just omit those places from my tips), but i have seen this restaurant recommended on several websites, so i wanted to add my experience. this is a generic american food restaurant. i like generic american food restaurants. i wasn't expecting the dining experience of a lifetime, but even with my fairly modest expectations, however, i saw nothing in this restaurant to distinguish it from lots of others.

there are booths and a bar; the menu has many selections (hamburgers, chicken, steaks, seafood, salads). entrées are approx $10-$15. i had a good, spicy bloody mary before dinner ($5 with absolut vodka, well vodka is cheaper). the rolls that came with dinner were great -- soft, apparently basted with garlic butter, with parmesan cheese on top. after dinner i had coffee. one really nice thing about this restaurant is that the service is quick, friendly, and attentive.

however, the main dish and my dessert were another story altogether. i ordered cajun chicken with linguini ($10). although the linguini and accompanying vegetables were very good, the chicken was neither blackened nor spicy, as advertised, and there was not enough of it (four small strips, it ran out long before the linguini did). the key lime pie ($5) afterward was very bland.

i don't understand the glowing reviews this restaurant has received from other travelers. maybe i was just in a bad mood that night!
