For a long time, this was the end of the line, until the tracks were extended to Port Myers. Built in 1928, this is the only station still standing of 6 designed in the mission-colonial revival style, popular at the time. The station is used as an antique mall and museum, and one notes the segregationist era bathrooms--white and colored.
The entire neighborhood was designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, and for good reason. There are numerous examples of the classic Florida gulf architecture here which are well cared for. Note these examples:
The Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society both reside inside what is the most historic residence in town, the A.C. Freeman House, also known as the Gilchrist House. Located quite near the foot of the bridge leading to Port Charlotte, it is also near Gilchrist Park and the old Main Street downtown. Built in 1903, this is Charlotte County's only Victorian house. House tours are available from 8-5pm.
