Punta Gorda Things to Do

  • Punta Gorda Railroad Depot

    For a long time, this was the end of the line, until the tracks were extended to Port Myers. Built in 1928, this is the only station still standing of 6 designed in the mission-colonial revival style, popular at the time. The station is used as an antique mall and museum, and one notes the segregationist era bathrooms--white and colored.

    This is a shopping and restuarant complex along th harbour in Punta Gorda,. We spent a couple of hours here one Sunday a couple of weeks ago .Its a nice day destination to come to do some shpping or grab a meal . They have some different little specialty shops that are fun to explore.

    Punta Gorda was settled in the late 1800's. There is a wonderful old town area with some gorgeous old houses perched in the shade of their beautiful mature trees . Its nice to park the car and take a stroll in this charming area.

    This is a good bet for a cup of java or tea . The service is friendly and helpful. They made me a wonderful iced coffe , flavoured and with skim milk . ( cookies are good too). You can take a seat outside which is nice too.

    It's hard to call this live music since the only thing live were the vocals. Otherwise, the entire band was electronic recordings. But, old folks were having a good time dancing swing to 1950's music, and the setting couldn't be much better as the pics show. There are a lot of retired folks living in the area.

    Charlie's winds were over 130 miles per hour when it hit the city so even permanent homes, office buildings, and shopping centers were not spared. In the corner of this picture is a home covered with a blue tarp as it's roof is damaged but livable. Blue is now a very popular color for roofs in this hard hit city.

    Rubble piled high block after block. Not all damage was only done to trailer parks and mobile homes. A great many permanent homes were also ruined or destroyed. It was a very discourgaging sight to see and this is about thirty days after hurricane hit the city.
