As you walk along the historic district you will see an old wooden building on one side. This is the oldest schoolhouse in the United States. It was originally a private home, but became a school in 1788. You enter the grounds through the gift shop, I think the fee is about $4 but we got in free that day. There are a number of artifacts from the 18th Century life in Saint Augustine on display. There are also several amusing and interesting touches throughout. Worth a visit!

This is a cute little place to visit.
First you have to buy a ticket inside the gift shop and enter throuh the side door. The old school house is in a garden behind the gift shop. There are old relics to take you back in time, an old outhouse (to take funny pictures).

Apparently this was the oldest schoolhouse in the U.S. They now have a robot-woman who pops out of the top window now and then to call the children into class. Robot teachers, just like in the olden days....

The oldest wooden school house in the United States dates back to the early 18th century. The building is constructed of red cedar and cypress. Wooden pegs keep the timbers in place. Everything was made by hand, even the nails. The schoolmaster and his family had their living quarters upstairs. The downstairs was used as the classroom. The Oldest Wooden School house was also the first co-ed school, as it educated girls and boys together beginning in 1788. You can notice the enormous chain that wraps around the school house and is tied to an anchor. The anchor and chain were added back in 1937 when a hurricane threatened St. Augustine and an attempt was made to secure the oldest school house so the historic gem of a building would not be lost. So far, so good.

A great experience for kids to see a school from the early 1700's. It only takes a few minutes and there is a nominal admission charge. As a bonus you receive a souvenir 'diploma' as a keepsake.

This is the oldest school house in the United States. It's pretty cool to see. There are chains around the building, which was once an actual home, to secure it during hurricanes.
