We visited a tourist trap that I really didn't mind so much. It was the Taberna Del Gallo bar. It's right on St. George street and is only open at night. It's cool in that it is lit solely by candles (except for the bathrooms). It's tacky because it is staffed by pirates. Yes, pirates. At 8 Pm they start singing sea shanties. Oh, just have a few Yuenglings and enjoy.

Unique Suggestions: As mentioned above, just accept your fate and sway to the dulcet tones of singing surfer-pirates. Would you rather be at some crappy bar where they just serve drinks, and have no pirates?

Fun Alternatives: You want a real bar? Not some place that caters to tourists and college students? What the hell are doing in downtown St. Augustine?

    Santa Maria

The restaurant has a great location on the water by the town center and you can feed seagulls through little trap doors they built by each table, but the food is awful. I have been there a couple of times to see if it was a fluke but - no, the food has always been awful. So ... find anywhere else if you want to eat.

Unique Suggestions: Feed the birds your dinner - you won't miss it (believe me).

Fun Alternatives: Anywhere is a good alternative but A1A Ale House is opposite and worth walking the 100 yards to.

It is unfair of me to say tourist trap...but you will not see a whole lot locals inside. Visit once and say you did ... that should be enough.

It was built prior to 1763. You will see old school books, maps and old school items.

Open Daily- 14 St. George Street. 904.824.0192

The visitor center will have a coupon book with 50c off admission.
