click pic to enlarge view by Rhondaj It's pretty hard to get lost as this is a small island with a few well-marked main roads. Okay, so we did go around in circles a few times, but we weren't paying attention! The main roads across are Periwinkle Way, which you come onto as you leave the causeway (really long bridge). You'll run into Tarpon (not Tampon) Bay Road. Go right to get onto Sanibel-Captiva Rd. going to Captiva of course, and the Wildlife Refuge. Turn left on Tarpon to get onto West Gulf Drive which follows the water. My parents tell me that in winter, driving on this island is sheer hell and damnation, as the traffic is horrific. They often park on the other side of the causeway and take a shuttle over. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

a size for everyone by Rhondaj Billy's certainly has the market on bike rentals. Every other biker I saw had a tag hanging off the back of their bike, letting you know where their bike rental came from! Also saw a lot of scooters zipping around with barely in control drivers. There are 22 miles of bike paths (paved) on the island. Bikers can also ride the roads if they dare. I imagine this is a very popular way of getting around in winter when traffic is practically at a stand-still. Leave a Comment

by Aussie666 Rentals are right on Periwinkle main and is cheap...$10/day and fun way to explore most of the island. Bike paths (25 miles worth) are smoothly paved and there's galleries, shops and bars (while someone else shops) along the way. It's also a good way to check out other resorts for next time. Tops down girls!! by Aussie666 Although you probably could do without a car (shuttles from Ft. Myers airport) and have everything you need delivered to your condo (on-island grocerers will stock your shelves and fridge prior to your arrival, ask the rental agency), if the the weather turns sour, you can always pack up the gear and head off to where the sun is shining that day. Just watch the weather station, see where it's clear and go!! 2 hours to Tampa or for a longer day trip, head down to Key Largo..if you have to much fun, crash there for the night. Heading to Sanibel by tpangelinan This draw-bridge can close down whenever it needs to. It costs $3.00 every time you cross from Fort Meyers to Sanibel Island. There is talk of replacing the bridge soon. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Sanibel Map by GUYON You do not need a map : there is only one true road. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Be warned that during the tourist high season December thru March traffic in Sanibel and Captiva can get backed up quite often during certian times of the day due to the fact that one main road serves both islands. Still all in all I'll take a traffic jam here in paradise that smooth sailing at home. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Myself and my girlfriend were on Sanibel 2 weeks ago and used Sanibel Double D (Designated Drivers). The owners are fabulous, Sandy and Joel and both of them are from the island and know it very well and of course live there themselves. I can't remember all of the fares but they were available when we needed them on a moments notice. They have a Lincoln which was spotless and got the white glove treatment along with a 10 passenger van and a minivan. Very courteous and know their way around the islands from clubs and bars to airports. Without them we would not have enjoyed are week. We will use them for sure the next time we go. The number we used to reach them was 239.472.3458 and I just found their website www.SanibelDoubleD.com Bill and Lydia Leave a Comment

Baby Raccoon by catalysta He and his cohorts managed to make an arrangement with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to lease 2200 acres of mangrove wetlands longterm, forming the Sanibel Island National Wildlife Refuge. Upon his death in 1962, trustees of the conservation foundation that had been formed in his name move to solidify their tenuous grip on these precious wetlands. Finally in 1967, the lands were placed under federal ownership, and thus was formed the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Leave a Comment
