Located right next to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Centre, GWIZ is a really neat place to take your kids. They have a lot of hands-on things for them to do, and there's a pretty interesting eco-zone exhibit about local wildlife and preservation. The staff is also really, really dedicated and hard-working. They are used to screaming children, also.
When I was working at a summer camp in Sarasota, we took the kids here. They went bananas! It was the most fun they had probably all summer.
WIZ is a hands on science museum that looks like it will be a blast. They strive to make science relevant, technology understandable, and learning an interactive adventure for people of all ages.
And it is a great way to get out of the Florida heat.

We spent about 3 hours here in May 2007, and could have spent a few more easily. This museum is full of hands-on exhibits for kids (from simple building blocks for the younger kids to magnetic experiments and math puzzles for the oldest), plus visiting exhibits, and even a Russian space toilet. There is also a nice large playground right outside (open even after the museum closes) and walking paths which we didn't have a chance to explore. The local visitor center had discount coupons for admission.
