the wishing whale - get it? it sounds like well.

The Mote Marine Aquarium is part of Mote Marine Laboratory, a facility for the study of local marine biology. The staff, therefore, is freakishly knowledgeable. It's also a really good place to see local animals. Plus, they offer all kinds of crazy programs that allow you to get even closer to Flipper and the like.

Delightful - kids will enjoy it.

A great way to see the Florida Manatee!

This is mainly a research aquarium and also serves to rehabilitation center but there is also a nice aquarium. A family favorite is a giant preserved octopus (something like 18 feet long).

The real gem here is the aquarium’s docents – there are quite a few volunteer experts who are here to share their knowledge and stories about the animals, their habits and rehabilitation. Go during off times to get their total attention.

Current projects at Mote include research on red tide (a devastating algae problem found in ocean), research the local dolphin population and rehabilitation of a large variety of sea turtles, dolphins and manatees. See the following for more Motes research on red tide
    http://isurus.mote.org/~mhenry/WREDTIDE.html

There are also several very nice gift shops. Your admission and gift shop purchase all go to support this beneficial research and animal rehabilitation.

They also have an injured whale/dolphin hospital, as well as educational cinema and an interactive computer auditorium. Mote is a working marine science research lab where they always have lots of interesting projects going on.

Dont miss seeing the remains of a Giant Squid on display here.

Contact Cove lets you get close to the sea life.

Mote Marine Laboratory originally began as a laboratory that conducted studies on sharks. Mote now has expanded and conducts research in seven different research centers, each with it's own specialty including sharks, marine mammels, sea turtles, and aquaculture to name a few. Mote recognizes the importance of educating the public about the oceans and sealife and operates an aquarium that is open to everyone. The aquarium has very knowledgable guides that can answer most of your questions about the sea life that you will see. This is a great experience for young and old alike!

"Hands-on" touch tanks enabled us to pet the stingless stringrays & experience the feel of horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and other marine animals. It took some time for my child to take courage into her hands & touch one of them, after being assured by me & an aquarium worker that it would not hurt or bite her! You'll also see a 25 foot perfectly preserved giant squid;one of only two in the United states
