    Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The pelican man’s bird sanctuary rehabs injured birds of all types.

The facility is quite large and has beautifully manicured grounds. Walking through the grounds is quite relaxing and I really enjoy watching all the different birds fom around the world.

The sanctuary sits on the other side of the Mote parking lot so be sure stop by when you visit Mote.

Sundays at the Sanctuary are often free and on other days you'll get a dollar off if you visited Mote Aquarium that day (keep your ticket stub).

If you visit on a day where admission is free - please make a donation - the money goes to support the rehab of our wild friends.

A favorite time to visit is during the baby bird season which runs from April to August. During this time the center cares for over 1,500 birds at the bird hospital.

There are educational programs available. The center is always looking for volunteers

    Pretty Bird!

As you are walking about in Sarasota, you'll see little tin cans and boxes near almost every single cash register in town for the Pelican Man Bird Sanctuary. Pelican Man was started by Dale Shields, local hero, who has saved literally hundreds of birds and animals. Most birds are released back into their natural habitat, but the birds that are premanently disabled live in his sanctuary that is open to the public. Here you can see all kinds of local birds, including rare ones like the Rosette Spoonbill. Plus, you can feel good because your donation goes to helping care for the animals.
