I love walking in this area on summer evenings. Its a great stroll and has some fantastic artsy stores (130 of them in fact) and some great restaurants. Wonderfully relaxing. I go here at least once every time I visit Sarasota. The area has events every month that are wonderful. Jazz fests, arts shows, wine events. Check the website to see what is going on. Delightful - kids will enjoy it. A great way to see the Florida Manatee! This is mainly a research aquarium and also serves to rehabilitation center but there is also a nice aquarium. A family favorite is a giant preserved octopus (something like 18 feet long). The real gem here is the aquarium’s docents – there are quite a few volunteer experts who are here to share their knowledge and stories about the animals, their habits and rehabilitation. Go during off times to get their total attention. Current projects at Mote include research on red tide (a devastating algae problem found in ocean), research the local dolphin population and rehabilitation of a large variety of sea turtles, dolphins and manatees. See the following for more Motes research on red tide http://isurus.mote.org/~mhenry/WREDTIDE.html There are also several very nice gift shops. Your admission and gift shop purchase all go to support this beneficial research and animal rehabilitation. Tickets General admission includes access to Mote Aquarium, the Ann and Alfred E. Goldstein Marine Mammal Center and Immersion Cinema. Adults ‑ $15 Children 4-12 ‑ $10 Adults 65+ get $1 off general admission (not valid with other offers) Their website often has coupons Leave a Comment Address: 1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy. Thanks to the Ringley (as in Ringley Brothers Barnum Bailey Circus) families infusion of money into the local community Sarasota has a wonderful array of art and culture available for such a small town. So much so that Sarasota is known as Floridia's Cultural Coast including: Professional symphony, ballet and opera More than 10 theaters and 30 art galleries The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art is Florida's State Museum Incredible - this has it's on tip Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, known for its architecture and great acoustics, seats 1,700 Sarasota Opera house - one of the top rated opera houses in the US - If you have never been to an opera this is a wonderful place to see your first. This opera house is one of the highest rated in the US and is a wonderful place to get an introduction to opera. Really - if you give opera a try you'll love it! I recently took my parents to their first opera (despite their protests) and they came out glowing! Opera was created as cheap entrainment for Italian pheasants so the plots are anything but stiff and formal - they are crazy, zany, fun and often scandalous. You will be surprised how many of the songs and music score you will know thanks to movies, commercials and cartoons. ADVICE ON ATTENDING OPERA'S Yes, operas are often in other languages but English translations are projected above the stage and the singing and symphony are so wonderful that if your like me you'll not even need to read the words to get totally carried away. The stories are soap-opera-ish - - dying women, men dressed as women dressed as men, betrayal/affairs/suicides/deaths/murders. It can get complicated - so reading the libretto or the story beforehand will help you keep up with the twist and turns of the plot. Download these from the web (just put the name of the opera into google) OR attend one of the Sarasota Opera's free pre-performance introductions – arrive 45 minutes before the opera starts OR show up a half hour early to read the abbreviated version in your program. I often have to look at this during intermission to determine who is having an affair with whom. DRESS - despite Florida's normal casual atmosphere we do dress up for opera - ladies wear everything from slacks, dresses and even formals. Most ladies are in dresses and the majority of men are in sport jackets or a suit/tie. However, if you didn't bring dress clothes with you don't worry - anything but shorts and t-shirts is acceptable - were in Florida after all! Ladies if your going sleeveless remember to bring a shaw or light jacket the theaters do get cold. TIME - Opera's are longer than normal plays -depending on the opera it will last 3 to 4 hours -so eat beforehand! This is a nature reserve with several parts The Pioneer area at CMNC consists of a museum of pioneer history, pioneer cabin, blacksmith shop, working sugar cane mill and, one of our major achievements, the restored Tatum House. The Museum houses historic objects, mostly from the Crowley family and the Old Miakka area including: household furnishings, tools, and items from the original Old Miakka general store and post office. The oldest surviving schoolhouse in Sarasota County, the Tatum Ridge Schoolhouse was built circa 1905 Self-guided nature trail winds through CMNC property from high and dry pine flatwoods, through the shady oak hammock, over the Maple Branch swamp, and out to the edge of the expansive Tatum Sawgrass Marsh along the Myakka River. The wide trails offer easy and pleasant walking conditions that are enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Visitors are provided with a booklet for the self-guided trail that details much of the native flora and fauna. Going parasailng in Siesta Key near Sarasota if beautiful and actually a great value. You take a cruise out the intercoastal to the beach area and fly out in the gulf. So relaxing and fun and super easy. You take off and land on the back of the boat so you don't even have to get wet if you don't want to. The water is beautiful and the parasail crew are really cool and professional. Great for anyone and good memories!
