Know about this?
The haves and the have-nots
Tampa strikes me as New Orleans Part 2-a few wealthly people (from other cities) and a boatload of low wage jobs built around tourism, call centers, contract manufacturing, and awful schools. Tampa is a fun place if you are 1) single, 2) are not real ambitious about you career (maybe you can run that call center someday!), 3) like to party. It is not family friendly unless you are wealthy enough to afford one of the few good private schools in the area or lucky enough to get into a magnet school. Despite a great tax system, value-added businesses avoid Floritucky like the plague as the labor force sucks. No biotech, no real tech, very little advertising, no or little money mgmt (lots of sleazeball brokers). By the way, Tampa shouldn't have a city flag but a brass pole. Strip city. Neck it up!
Strip Clubs are THE local custom
According to www.stripclublist.com, Tampa boasts about 32 strip clubs/gentleman's clubs within the city limits. With a population of 303,447 in Tampa, that is about one strip club for every 9,500 people. For comparison New Hampshire has just one gentleman's club for every 440,000 people (I guess there is just one in the whole state!).
Around Tampa you will find dozens more strip clubs. Most with horrible names, and many of which have been repeatedly busted for prostitution.
No Middle class
Why did I move here? With about 4 million people living in Greater Tampa, I figured employment opportunities would be on a par.
Wrong, as a matter of fact construction type workers, blue collar trades are much more valued (and better paid) than white collar, college degree and hi tech employees.
As a matter of fact, if you had a high paying job (over 50K) with a prestigious company, you're untouchable. They don't want to hire anyone who's accustomed to a good salary where you've been treated good and had advanced through promotions/pay raises.
Why? Jealousy among hiring management who have never been to the level you've been?
These employers here are famous for demanding every skill under the sun, then make silly offers like $35K. Overly picky and grossly underpaying. Then you see these same jobs with the same employers being advertised 3 months later, 6 months later as it turns out they've made yet another "bad hiring decesion".
When all you offer is crumbs, then all you attract and retain is rats.
For anyone who's ambitious or ever been successful elsewhere avoid this place like the plague. It will be the worst career move you've ever made! If you need to work to earn a living, just cross this place off of your list!
My best memory of Tampa will...
My best memory of Tampa will be when I leave it. I have never spent a more useless 2 years of my life in one place, ever. From the hillbillies eating fried chicken and barbecue to the facist cops putting up cameras in Ybor City, I can't wait for the next climactic change to raise sea level and inundate the whole goddam state. It would be no loss to humanity
