 | Tampa Restaurants | Tips 41 - 50 of 160 | | We found Grillsmith quite by accident - we found a Cuban place that was closed, and the owner steered us toward this Grillsmith place. And I'm glad she did. Grillsmith is your basic American type grill, with steaks, chops, sandwiches and seafood too. The service is very good and friendly, and the prices are good too. Your mouth won't water with the food at Grillsmith, but it's a fine place to stop by for tasty, quality food. And they do takeout too.
I've had a couple of sandwiches here. The cajun burger isn't bad at all. I've heard they have very good seafood though. No I am not kidding here – this is a converted school bus with a kitchen added to it that serves some of the best tacos in town – for cheap. This place is such a local favorite that it is constantly in the paper and is a favorite even for us yuppies as well as the more down home folk. St. Petersburg Times' restaurant critic Chris Sherman even put El Taconazo on his Best of 2004 list in January. It’s real name is El Taconazo and it is owned by Mexican immigrants Monica & Roberto Morfin but I suspect few people know its real name – everyone calls it the Taco bus. The converted school bus is the kitchen and their is a small building and a patio for people to eat - the atmosphere is fun and at lunch there is such a crowd it is hard to find parking.
Everything is great - Smashed refried beans, fish tacos, tostados, quesdillas and ceviche Prices range from $1.35 to $6.25 I normally get the lunch or dinner special - they normally offer 4 different ones each day. The Lunch special is $4.25 and is enough for at least 2 meals for me. I get it to go but I eat in. There is a little outdoor area that reminds me of a beach side get away - indoor seating is also available. Smashed refried beans Tacos Ceviche Also has deserts - flan and tres leches Hours 7:30 AM to 9PM Wednesday to Sunday 8 AM to 3 PM Sunday Closed Monday and Tuesday The area this is located in is a tad questionable - if your a lone female like me go before dusk. Bern's specializes in steaks. A non-descript exterior hides an interior worthy of Disney (including a foyer/lobby that one pictures a bordello to look like). The showiness extends beyond the decor with an extensive eclectic wine list and menu. The smooth waiters steer one to the abbreviated menu and winelist and suggest one share a bigger steak than order two smaller, individual steaks. However, sharing does not extend to the vegetables accompanying the steak - one of my companions was handed her half of the steak minus any veg. and had to ask for the veg. to be equally shared. Unlike top class steak restaurants you do not get to look at a selection of steak, but you do get to see a tray of them (looking much the same as each other!) when you tour the kitchens - a feature of the restaurant. The menu talks about ageing but I did not read that section, so assumed - perhaps wrongly - that all the steak were aged. My 1/2 of "Delmonico" steak did not have the mouth feel of a rib eye style piece of meat and it was tough to boot. Aged? Hmmm. The waiter offered to replace my steak which I refused. So he gave me a free dessert instead. The companion who shared my steak did not comment then but has said that his was tough too and that he is happy not to experience Bern's again. The after dinner tour was of their wine cellar and kitchens (nothing out of the ordinary if you have been to Napa and Europe), culminating with a walk up the stairs to mock casks in which we were seated for dessert. Again an extensive menu and accompanying wines and liquors. A neat marketing move as we would not otheerwise have ordered desserts. I asked our server why the Ridge Geyserville was marked as $54.95 (or $56.95) up there and about $60.95 in the dining room. She did not know. All she could say was that they did not offer many of the ame wines upstairs and downstairs. For the price we could have done better at a Ruth's Chris. But do go to Bern's for the spectacle.

SideBern's is a rather pricy restaurant with a rather ecletic menu. In fact, the menu changes nightly. The night we were there, it included everything from steak to wild boar. OK, I had the steak, which was very good - a tender steak, served with yummy potatoes and some tasty little tomatoes too...delicious. I head the wild boar was just OK, but others raved about the lamb. SideBern's also has an extensive selection of seafood, even dim sum. I was with a big party and they seated us in a private room with a window view of the kitchen - pretty unique. We could see everything, the good and the bad. I think there was some sort of argument there - at least no one was throwing knives at each other! SideBern's is not a place to go for a cheap meal; in fact, it's rather pricey. If you have the means though, or are just looking for a special meal in a really good restaurant, I would recommend SideBerns. Jackson's is a fun, casual restaurant, right in downtown Tampa right on the river. It serves delicious seafood including an extensive sushi menu. Eat indoors or outdoors and get some great views of downtown Tampa. The service is very friendly, though a little slow the night we were there...but they bought us drinks to make up for it, so it's all good. I went with the cajun chicken - it was OK, but they went a little too heavy on the blue cheese. I'll try the salmon next time. The decor is what I would call "smart modern", and the clientele seemed young professional. Jackson's is probably a bit of a "meet market", but I thought it was laid back nonetheless. The party I was with all had a wonderful time. Jackson's is a fine place to bring some friends for a good meal and some drinks. Stop by next time you're in Tampa Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterAddress: 601 S Harbour Island BlvdPhone: 813-277-0112Directions: Right in downtown Tampa, adjacent to the Wyndham Hotel

This casual dining place has it right. Real Mexican food, nice dinners, reasonable prices, very friendly& attentive servers. Nice selection of Mexican beers, wine selection is above average for mexican place. We always feel comortable there, leave with a full belly, and vow to return. Always a good crowd, but able to get in 'muy rapido'. Has nice selections of house specials which are all worth a try. A Lot of good prime steak usage in the meat selections. albeit Mexican style.

Have you heard about the "raw food" craze that is taking Hollywood by storm. Yes that is raw as in uncooked, mostly vegetarian food. Well Tampa has a raw food place (it also serves vegan and vegetarian food) so give it a try This is a small restaurant with just seven tables and the food and atmosphere is good Open Tuesday to Saturday 11 am to 9 pm

Sometimes restaurant recommendations from friends don't pan out. You wonder, "How the heck are we friends considering they find this fare delicious?" (I half apologize for being somewhat food snobby in saying that.) Ceviche was a recommendation. And Ceviche proved to be absolutely fantastic. I would eat here everyday if I could and it would take a good while for me to run out of options. They're menu is guaranteed to make your mouth water (if your tastes are anything like mine, that is!). My gosh, I couldn't stop ordering additional plates! And when they arrived at the table we almost fought over them! The decor/over all ambience is ultra cozy and charming, this place is small and dimly lit and packed to the gills.
What we chowed down: Queso de cabra Papatas bravas Gambas al ajillo Vieiras rellenas Calamares fritos Gambas y aguacate Champinones de Sevilla (visit their Web site menu for descriptions of these succulent items: http://www.ceviche.com/menu.php) DO NOT go here with out sipping on their champagne sangria either! You'll regret it! Leave a Comment
