St Petersburg - Clearwater International Airport

St Petersburg - Clearwater International Airport (aka PIE) was constructed by the US Army in 1941 as a training base for pilots heading off to war. After the war, the airfield became a commercial airport called Pinellas International Airport (named after the county), and the main runway was extended north into the bay. Later, commercial jet traffic was consolidated to Tampa, meaning PIE was used mainly for charters, private planes, and the coast guard.

Today the airport is still home to Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, considered the largest and busiest Coast Guard Air Station in the US. The largest commercial airlines at PIE are Allegiant Air and USA 3000, which serve a variety of northern cities, while a few smaller airlines serve regional destinations and come Canadian cities. United Parcel Service also has a large operation at the airport.

PIE has 13 gates that handle about 750,000 passengers each year. Parking is $13 a day, and rental cars are available. The airport has one restaurant and one gift shop/snack bar.

If you are flying into the Tampa area you are in luck we have some of the highest rated airports in the world.

There are two airports to choose from:
1) the Tampa International Airport – http://www.tampaairport.com/ Airport Code TIA
2) St Petersburg Clearwater Airport - http://www.fly2pie.com/ Airport code PIE

TIA is the larger of the two airports and has the most flights, however PIE has quite a few discount airlines so it is worth looking into.

As of this writing the discount airlines to/from these two airports include:

Tampa Discount Airlines Include:
1) Jet Blue
2) Spirit
3) Song
4) Southwest
5) Allegiant Air Orlando and Tampa Bay - www.allegiantair.com
6) Frontier & Airtran
For a current list of all airlines at this airport http://www.tampaairport.com/flights/airlines.asp

St Pete Clearwater has
5) USA3000 – Flies into St Pete when wrote this review they had flights into: Cleveland, Chicago (O'Hare), Newark, Philadelphia, Detroit, Pittsburgh and St. Louis
6) Hooters air - www.hootersair.com – flies to Allentown, PA and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA Reservations: 1-888-FLY-HOOT (1-888-359-4668)
7) CanJet Airlines www.canjet.com - Service to the following cities: Moncton, New Brunswick, Halifax, Nova Scotia, St. John's, Newfoundland, Toronto, Ontario Call 1-800-809-7777
8) Conquest Vacations: www.conquestvacations.com Service to the following cities: Toronto

Another option is flying into the Orlando International Airport. This airport is approximately one and a half hours from Tampa but travel times may vary depending on your final Tampa destination and the traffic conditions in Orlando. Over the years I haven’t seen any differences between the flight prices between Tampa and Orlando. However, due to Disney Orlando has a nice selection of International flights and I often find better flight times and international connections to/from Orlando. This is especially true for flight to Africa.

Good choices for booking your flight into Tampa include:
1) Priceline.com
2) Orbitz.com
3) Travelocity.com

Getting to Tampa

The Sunshine Skyway

Tampa International Airport has won many awards and much praise for its innovative design. It just opened a fancy new airside and more expansions are in the works, so the best just keeps getting better.

Speaking of expansions, both interstate highways into Tampa (I-4 and I-275) plus the Crosstown (aka Selmon) Expressway and the Veterans Expressway / Memorial Highway interchange are all currently being widened and rennovated, with several more years of uneven pavement and blinking barricades yet to go. Watch the orange cones!

For you rich slobs (or cruise takers), arrive by boat if you can. The trip under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and up the bay is gorgeous.

Tampa international Airport, off Memorial Highway and Fla.60, 5 miles northwest of downtown Tampa, is the major gateway to this area. All of the major car rental firms have booths at or near the airport.
Check Tampa International Airport website www.tampaairport.com out.

You can fly there to Tampa International Airport. But be warned, cause they cancel flights all the time and you may have to wait for a few extra hours. I've been late many times returning home because of delays and cancelled flights.
Automobiles are probably the best way to travel throughout the city. I've heard that they are trying to build a monorail system throughout the state sometime soon. This will cut down on traffic and be a big help to everyone.
