You will NOT see dolphins jumping through hoops or doing synchronized swimming routines here. Visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a much more authentic experience. The tours and displays are secondary to the Aquarium's primary purpose - rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals.
Several times a day, volunteer staffmembers give presentations about the various animals at the facility. The highlights are the dolphins, turtles, and otters. The dolphins do some "tricks" but the emphasis is more on the interaction between the animals and their trainers. A truly satisfying experience - plus all the admission fees go directly to the care and rehabilitation of the animals.
Another highlight - the Aquarium offers a Sea Life Safari Excursion that explores the waterways around Clearwater. The cruise is about 2 1/2 hours long and includes a short stop on a teeny-tiny island to gather shells and hunt for sea creatures. A marine biologist serves as a guide throughout the tour. Marine creatures are caught and released during the trip so guests have a chance to examine the different animals up close.
I highly recommend both the Aquarium and the Sea Life Safari, especially as an alternative to many of the for-profit excursions and animal shows in the area. I think this would be a particularly good way to teach children respect for animals and their environment.
