Channelside is a former industrial area located at the confluence of three channels just east of Downtown Tampa. In recent years it has gradually been gentrified with new residential development. Channelside is also now home to the city’s cruise ship terminal, the Florida Aquarium, and a small complex of restaurants and shops situated between the two called Channelside Bay Plaza. We spent most of our time in this area at the Florida Aquarium--a great place to spend a hot afternoon.

After touring the aquarium we briefly stopped next store at a sports store at Channelside Bay Plaza so that my then four-year-old son, who likes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, could get an official Buccaneer souvenir from Tampa. The store was street-facing, so we never actually went into the central courtyard area of the complex, but I know that it is surrounded by restaurants and night clubs and at times gets dwarfed when a giant cruise ship is in port.

    Channelside Area

    by Ericasmurf99 Updated Mar 13, 2009

My girlfriends and I enjoyed this area. We went to see Friday the 13th on the IMAX screen at the Channelside movies. When we came out of the theater there was a band playing in the center. Oh, and there were pirates walking around. There was not a pirate festival...so I am not sure what they were doing. Nothing much surprises me though after living in Key West though. Do you realize how many pirates I see a day here?

Channelside is a fairly new area in Tampa. It's close to downtown and is where the cruise ships dock. The cool thing is that there are quite a few good restaurants and shops right at Channelside but the really cool thing is the trolley car that can take you from Channelside to the Florida Aquarium and then all the way to Ybor City. It's a must if you only have a day or so to sightsee in Tampa.

Channel side is close to the cruise ship ports, the Florida aquarium and a trolley ride from the Ybor historic district. Channel side is a man made, brand new entertainment districts. Has a movie and IMAX theaters, restaurants, clubs and shops. A great place for a couple to go out for the evening.
