Clearwater is a barrier island about 20 miles from Tampa, and it boasts a beautiful 2.5 mile white sand beach. This is the biggest beach town near Tampa, and it offers visitors a tight cluster of high-rise hotels and condos surrounded by dozens of little restaurants, bars, and shops in an older town feel. Clearwater Beach is sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico with its beaches and bikinis and the Intracoastal Waterway with a big marina and aquarium. The center point of the town's beach life is the $30 million beach walk that was unveiled in the early 2000s.
Beautiful Caladesi Island State Park is just north of Clearwater Beach, and Sand Key County Park is just across the bridge to the south.
Visit Downtown Clearwater
Clearwater, with a population of about 110,000 people is the third largest city in the Tampa Bay area, behind Tampa and St Pete. The town was first settled when Fort Harrison was constructed in 1835 on a bluff overlooking the harbor. Clearwater was incorporated in 1891, and it became the county seat when Pinellas County was created in 1915. During World War II, Clearwater was a large training camp.
Clearwater's top attraction is Clearwater Beach, which is within the city limits. Downtown Clearwater has a nice area with numerous restaurants and shops. Clearwater is also the spring training site for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Clearwater Beach is a hotspot for young people--especially during March and April--when the colleges are on Spring Break.
