The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)

If you are from a big city like Chicago or New York, you probably will think that MOSI is nothing special compared to your own museum back home. However, it is the coolest exploration center / museum that I've seen in the Southeast, so that's got to stand for something.
The thing that people who are visiting Florida seem to most enjoy doing is sitting in the Hurricane room - a room that you strap into and feel hurricane-force winds. Only someone not from Florida could enjoy this. Us residents still have splinter sores from all the plywood we had to put up last season.
Anyway, besides that there's some neat hands-on stuff for the kids and an IMAX theatre.

This science museum will take 2 to 4 hours to tour minimum. While I normally enjoy most science museums I found this one way to simplistic for my adult tastes. If your kids are in grade school they should enjoy it.

If you have young kids there is a second building out back that is geared to younger kids that most do not know is out there. They also have a bunch of bouncy houses and a bouncy slide (admission extra) but is a great alternative if you are in town with young kids and it is too hot or rainy to go outside.

The theater does have some roaming exhibits that are wonderful and are worth going for adults. The "Bodies" exhibit has been here. I have been to about a dozen of these over the years and they are well worth it.

Also take time to do the butterfly exhibit out back.

It also has an IMAX THEATER that everyone will enjoy.
    Operating Hours:
    Mon. thru Fri. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    Sat. & Sun. 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
    Open 365 days per year

IMAX DOME THEATRE feature-length (special engagement) film pricing may vary but this will give you a good idea. They even play regular movies on this screen at times.:

    • $8.95 seniors
    • $7.95 children

Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is home to one of only a few domed IMAX theaters in the world. You may have been bored by an IMAX movie on a flat screen, but you haven't seen nothin' until you sit inside the giant golf-ball shaped MOSIMAX theater and watch a film. Just the opening demonstration of the sound system is amazing, and the movies themselves are even better.

The museum itself WAS just OK, but a whole new building full of new exhibits just opened. I haven't been yet myself, but I here it's very good, especially for kids.

Of the older stuff, the highlight is probably a wind tunnel built from an old jet engine which simulates hurricane-force winds. It's outside the main entrance, so try not to miss it.

Most IMAX movies last 30 to 60 minutes and you can swing through the museum in about 3 hours or so.

Musuem of Science and Industry is located very close to Busch Gardens and University of South Florida. The exhibits are geared towards children (and adults who slept through their science classes). The main attraction is the IMax theatre where the picture is projected onto a giant dome. This immerses you in the movie which is usually educational and shot in exotic locations. It is very impressive and a must-see.
Ignore the guy with the bad attitude in the picture :)

Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
An educational attraction offering many exhibits, including the inner workings of the human body, weather, outer space, and some Florida-specific technological exhibits. Of special note is the hi-wire bike you can ride, and Hurricane, and small room where you and several other guests get locked in and fan pushes winds up to over 75 miles per hour. There is also a unique IMAX dome theater that shows educational films. Admission includes one film at the IMAX theater.
