    dora canal

the dora canal was once called the elfin river. the elfin river was dredged in the 1830's. and became known as the dora canal. this one mile river connects lake dora to lake eustis. on this beautiful waterway you can see florida wildlife and 2,000 year old cypress trees. parts of the famous movie "african queen" was filmed on the dora canal. there is a tour boat operator located at the harbor side restaurant in tavares.

    dead river

    by doug48 Written Nov 9, 2007
    dead river

the dead river is actually an extention of lake eustis and not a river at all. it gets it's name from the fact there is no current. a beautiful body of water to take a cruise or fish. the dora chain of lakes is one of florida's best bass fishing spots.

    historical church

THIS IS a picture of Union Congregational Church

This church was founded in 1885 by W.W. Winchester of Mount Dora. It housed both Methodist and Baptist congregations until the early 1900s. Its first sanctuary was constructed in 1886-88 of lumber donated by Maj. Abrams, on land which he also donated. It was designed by J.B. Sears, who intended it to resemble Trinity Church in New York. It had a Victorian Revival style, with a bell cupola, gable roof with verge board, and unusual front porch.

    Tavares new City Hall

    by Michael_D Written Jan 5, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

City Hall - 201 E. Main Street On this site in 1888, a business building was nearly completed construction, when the great fire of April 1888 destroyed most of downtown. The plans were changed and what was salvaged was completed as Biltavern, which was later renamed the Osceola Hotel. The hotel rooms were upstairs, while the first floor was used by a number of commercial establishments, including a drug store, Mosely`s Grocery, Fretwell`s Meat Market, the Hitching Post Restaurant, Hill`s Bar, the Newton Chain Store, Western Auto, and Kenne Pearce Furniture. In 1980, the original building was remodeled to serve as the Tavares City Hall untill 1992, when it was torn down and the present city hall was built in its place.

    Old Railroad Station

    by Michael_D Written Jan 5, 2005

Railroad Station (Intersection of Alfred St. and the railroad tracks) Most of Americas railroads have been dismantled. Dont even get me started on Amcrash,,err Amtrak. In the mid 1880`s the emphasis was switched from making Tavares a resort town, to becoming a railroad and industrial center. The Texas and Gulf Railroad was completed in 1885 and the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway was completed in April of 1888. In the late 1880s a spark from one of the passing trains ignited the dry goods store of Charles H. Newell and resulting in a fire that burned the entire business district. The Grand Hotel with its three towers, plus 25 other principal buildings, were destroyed. The railroad station was one of the few building spared. It is now the firehouse.

Lake Building -formerly the Opera Building 230 E. Main Street Maj. Abrams built this structure, and for a time lived in it and it also served as the town`s opera house. In the rear during the 1890s was a tomato packing house. The Tavares Improvement Association met here, and this became the town hall up untill 1904. In 1917, the two top floors burned and following year, it was reduced to two floors and renamed the Lake Building. A number of stores have been located in this building include Chase`s Fashion Shop, A & P Grocery, the post office, the Dutch Warnocky Bakery, King`s Dress Shop, Barney Roth`s, and then Lincoln and Clara Rees` Petite Dress Shop.
