    red onion

the red onion is a great lunch spot in central vero beach. this small restaurant offers excellent burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and salads all moderately priced. a good alternative to the higher priced restaurants in central vero beach.

Riverside Cafe: Dining by the River

This restaurant would be easy to get to by dinghy from the moorings in the marina.

The place is very noisy, and the service is a bit haphazard. They did not tell us the specials (soup of the day was New England clam chowder and they also had prime rib for $18.94) which I might have gotten had I known what they were.

Favorite Dish: I had a spinach salad ($6.50 very good) and I wanted a shrimp salad sandwich ($7.50). The waiter assumed I'd want fries with that, but I wanted one of the other choices, so he took the fries off and I just got the sandwich and no extras.

Bob wanted the shrimp salad platter ($9.95), and they brought him a sandwich too. He said the shrimp pieces were too small to be sure if they were shrimp or something else.

We got iced tea which wasn't too cold, and it wasn't replenished.

I wanted peach melba but they didn't have that (it was on the menu) so I got apple pie instead. The pie wasn't anything special but the a la mode vanilla ice cream was excellent.

The bill for this was $34.15 plus tip

Captain Hiram's: Good food on the river.

    by cet128 Written Jul 7, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Capt. Hiram's restaurant is in downtown Sebastion. We liked this restaurant so much that the next time we go to Vero Beach we will eat here again. We were seated on a covered patio with an open air view of the boats docked just a few feet away. My wife had the seafood platter and she said it was very good. I had a simple fish and chips and they were good also.

Sonya's: What is at the hotel

This is the restaurant in the hotel. It looks very good but we have never gone there to eat. We had some hamburgers as carry-out one night and it was cheaper than at Bleacher's (the pool side food option).

    Ocean Grill: Fresh Seafood!

by AliasGirl Written Aug 11, 2004

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant seems to be a local attraction, it was very busy when we were there in August 2003. We went early and after many many hours and two bottles of red, we were still there enjoying the night!

The ambience, wait staff and owners were a pleasure! Made you feel very at home. The hot bread that was served was yummy! The food was very delicious and the ambience was great. We were there with another couple and we had a blast. Dessert/coffee and after dinner drinks were awesome too.

I highly recommend if you are in the area!

Island Cafe: The best fish & chips in Vero Beach!

by psychocy Updated Feb 15, 2010
    The Island Cafe
    4 more images

Just across the street from one Vero's famous beaches, the tiny Island Cafe serves up home-cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner year-round. You can take out and eat near the ocean, on one of the benches, or use their porch, with adequate seating for small families.

The selection is surprisingly large for such a small restaurant, and everything is cooked as healthfully as possible, while maintaining a home-cooked taste. The portions are generous. The Island Cafe's owners are also its operators, and they are obliging and wonderful people, one of whom is Trish Storey, a skilled local artist. Her reasonably priced acrylic paintings hang from the porch and walls on nice days, bringing the ambiance of the beach to your dining experience.

Prices are very reasonable and a cup of water with lemon is free!

Favorite Dish: The fish and chips is a gorgeous fillet of whitefish, a very large portion, coated in crispy panko and fried in soybean oil, which is much lower in fat and bad stuff than normal frying oils. The surprisingly good quality is not reflected in the price, as the dish is only $7.95 and comes with a generous helping of tasty fries. One of my favorite things about this dish is that it is made from flaky whitefish, not soft tilapia, like most other fried fish around Vero. The whitefish is quality and was hard to distinguish from haddock. They even provide London Pub's real Malt Vinegar with this dish, for those with a taste for it!

This restaurant is the best Cuban food ive had. The staff is friendly and very accommodating Prices are very affordable The food is out of this world. Its a small family owned restaurant. Dont let the local fool you or discourage you because it shares a bldg with a gas station but is not part of the gas station. Chef Fernando Pons is an amazing chef who pays strict attention to detail. Try it im sure you wont be disappointed.

Favorite Dish: Stuffed fish and Beautiful Havana Chicken. The plating and presentation is amazing. The taste of the different seasoning are awesome.
