Where ever people gather in numbers seagulls can become a problem. We saw these fearsome seagulls swoop & take food from inches near people's mouths. The gulls are very aggresive so don't leave leftovers lying around bag & bin or take them home with youl
    Prefer my sandwiches sandless anyway

  • Swimming Pools in Florida - Florida
    Swimming Pools in Florida
    by deecat
The seven or eight times that we've vacationed in Florida, we've always enjoyed a pool, whether we stayed in a hotel, a rental house, a villa, or a condo. Pools are just a way of life in Florida. Most homeowners have pools and most of those pools have elaborate screened areas so that swimming is comfortable even in the evenings when the mosquitos are ever-present.
We always make sure that we wear at least 30 Sunscreenb, and that we DO NOT swim or stay out in the sun between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.! Also, we always wear solar protective sunglasses.

Although pools are almost necessary in Florida, they should not be taken lightly; children should NEVER be left alone near a pool.

Even though these warnings seem to be obvious common sense in nature, they are necessary because so many people ignore them and suffer because of it.

Not comforting, and the ocean is very grassy, which had me doing Daffy Ducks at all times, most embarrassing for Mike.
If you really must swim here, take the Adolph's Meat Tenderizer, I hear that takes the sting out on the way to the hospital. We only saw them on the Atlantic side, never on the Gulf side, but that does mean they are not over there.

For exploring Central Florida attractions, read information and be prepared beforehand on what to do and what to avoid. We found that in places that we read about least, we were unprepared the most. For example, we read very little on Disney-Mgm and when we got there, we did not know where to go at all. It was Ifrah who took the belated lead after noticing that her parents were just too unplanned, got hold of a brochure and took 10 minutes to mark all the attractions and the best route to see them. And yes, I admit that we missed several good attractions at Disney-MGM.

    Small town 'law enforcement'...
  • Tip Rating:

  • Small town 'law enforcement' agencies are a pain here just as they are everywhere else. Beware driver behavior, especially if you ride a motorcycle. There's excessive speed, lane changing without signalling, tailgating. Keep your vehicle locked at all times. Know your destination and route before you start out driving. DON'T EVER stop to pick up someone looking for a hitch. Don't stop to help 'broken down' vehicles. There are enough official vehicles and tow vehicles to help--besides, most everyone has a cell phone anyway. Someone may point to your car and indicate a flat tire. If so, thank them and just get to the nearest service station. Don't stop if they offer to 'help'.

American alligators are one of only two species of alligator in the world (the other is the Chinese alligator). They are native to the southeastern United States, as well as along the Gulf Coast to Texas. Alligators live in wetlands and swamps throughout their range, but recently have started to appear in irrigation canals and ponds in parks, golf courses, and other places close to human habitation.

The average size of adult alligators is between 13 and 18 feet (four and five meters), although one attained the length of 19 feet (six meters). And the average weight of adults is between 400 and 600 pounds (181 and 272 kilograms). Because of their size, they are very powerful and can inflict serious injury or death.

Most alligators fear and avoid humans. However, alligator attacks are frequent enough so that visitors to Florida and other states within the range of alligators should exercize caution while in or near water. Most alligator attacks are not fatal, but injuries are usually severe due to the alligator's sharp teeth and strong jaws. Their jaws can exert 1,000 pounds of pressure per square inch (70 kilograms per square centimeter). There were only nine fatal alligator attacks from the 1970s through the 1990s, but the number of fatalities has been increasing substantially recently due to the alligators encroaching into human-populated areas.

Bark scorpions range throughout the southern United States. they are particularly plentiful in Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. These guys have a nasty sting and if you have a bee sting allergy, you could end up in the hospital from one of these.
    Be aware of your surrounding.

If you hike in Florida, watch out for snakes. Most of them are not poisonous , but a lot are.
    Certain Water Moccasines for example....

Coral snakes are also poisonous , but they are easy to spot, very colorful red, yellow and black ( in that order)

    Plus of course rattle snakes

Florida has absolutely beautiful lakes, and a whole lot of them have these monsters in them. Be aware that they move just as quickly on land as they do in the water. be aware of your surroundings. If you see a "log" at the water's edge, be sure it doesn't have legs before you sit and rest for a spell!
