  • Look out for your kids and rude pushy people. It annoys me when an adult will push a child out of the way for a better view or vantage point. It is easy to get seperated in a crowd

  • The Florida sun will cook you before you know it,especially on overcast days when it doesn't feel especially hot.

All I can say is don't try to go for a swim in any lakes or ponds. You won't last very long if you do.

Well, it seems like many people are color blind..when the stop lights are red they still think they have plenty of time to cross the intersection. I guess that is why they have so many on one pole (which doesn't help). Maybe they should get bigger ones, so they can spell out STOP and GO!

  • When you're travelling outside (walking/biking/tracking...), take REALLY care, where you sit down, touch, eat. here are many bugs (& their eggs). a lot of settelers just import seeds of other plants from all over the world (most of cuba & mexico). => the oecological system is 'dammaged'. here near tampa/ft.myers the government ('pest control') wants to get rid of all the plants not belonging here...

  • If you run into wild dolphins, don't touch them or feed them. Feeding them makes them lazy and dependant on man for their food. They stop hunting for food, and often die. If you want to interact with wild dolphin, let him come to you.

An estimated 2 days of german rain equals 30 minutes of rain in Florida. Usually the rain stops after half an hour or less.
On the picture you see what happens when it rains ALL NIGHT.
What you can´t see on the picture is my effort to try to drive to work with that car. As soon as I reached the biggest street corner in Miami Beach the water stopped the engine. With my help the traffic jam increased significantly....

And it took me days to get the car clean and prevent stinking. (I don´t have to mention, that I wasn´t my car ?)

In order to prevent the car from more floods I parked with two tires on the curb stones. The result : a ticket from a police officer...

Sharks. Oh yes - they´re out there. And they come pretty close : Most shark attacks are on the northern coasts of Florida. Mostly smaller sharks are attracted to the beaches. There they come as close as knee-deep water. (NO KIDDING)
There are several attacks each year. Forget the theory that sharks avoid the warm water on the beaches !!

--> Use beaches protected by coast guards. They close the beaches when they see anything unusual.

The shark on the left was caught close to Key Biscayne(this is a plastic model, because dead fish smells like hell)

This is especially for non-american tourists :
Miami is much safer for tourists now. They added many signs and safe routes with a 'sun' on it.
Nevertheless - to drive safe trough Miami PLEASE don´t forget to
    - LOCK the doors of the car as long as you sit in the car
    - take a good MAP with you. When you end up in a poor area avoid to ask for the right way. Look at the map or go on driving on bigger roads till you´re out or find some signs.
    - don´t forget that the mayority of Miami speaks SPANISH
    - try to get an air conditioned car. The humidity can be stressful. And open windows make it easy to get robbed during a stop at the traffic lights.
    - When you end up in a poor area in the night SOMETIMES its better to cross a RED TRAFFIC LIGHT before you get into a bad situation. At least take care what happens around you.
    - READ what your travel books tell you about driving in Miami
    - When they get you - don´t be a hero. Give them what they want.
    - When the police stops you: leave your hands visible on the steering weel. Don´t make any fast moves to grab the drivers licence before they can see what you´re doing.

Miami is not as bad as it may look like now - but you´re safer when you mind the rules. With that I never got in trouble during the six months.

Armadillos are mainly nocturnal. When threatened they roll into a ball, the hard armor protecting the soft body from predators such as bobcat. Unfortunately, it could not protect from car.
