There is an area just north of the Clematis Street district and just west of posh Palm Beach that is a bit sketchy that centers around Tamarind Ave & Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. I drive through it all the time, but it's not the place to stop and ask for directions necessarily, or to fill up your gas tank.
I have heard of muggings/petty theft taking place around here, but the people it happened to ( I know two of them) were not behaving very cautiously in my opinion. (One was buying illegal substances in the area at night, the other set her wallet down on a gas station counter while picking out gum from the rack below or something).
That's the thing- just be cautious/aware & you'll be fine.

Downtown West Palm Beach is fun but be careful when you go west of the railroad tracks. The neighborhood goes downhill fast, so just be careful in the DT areas at night. The same goes for PARTS of Lake Worth and Riviera Beach. Ask if you are not sure.

Drive through Lion County Safari, a great animal preserve with more than 1200 wild animals roaming on the grounds.
There is also Palm Beach Zoo at dreher Park, a 22-acre tropical zoological garden that houses 400 animals.
