Favorite thing: I have seen Flat Iron buildings in many cities and am always fascinated by them. The Flat Iron building in New York City is probably the best known and most photographed example. However the Flat Iron Building in Atlanta actually predates the one in New York by four years and is Atlanta's oldest standing skyscraper. It was built in 1897. The building is 11 stories tall and is short compared to the skyscrapers of today. It is located between Peachtree, Broad, and Poplar Streets. Today it is the English-American Building but is still known by most as the Flat Iron Building. Its address is 84 Peachtree Street and its open to the public during normal business hours.
Favorite thing: We have been to many cities and Atlanta has some of the best achitecture we seen. They come in so many shapes and size with rooflines we have not seen before. So while you are here make sure to look up and enjoy the sites and building.
Favorite thing: Atlanta has its own new shiny enclave of modernized prosperity, SUVs, national chain dining, glitzy shopping, and general conspicuous consumption. It's Buckhead, and it's the New South with a vengeance. Sometimes it feels like Dallas or Houston, sometimes it feels like Cleveland or Minneapolis - it's one of those new "edge cities" which modern sociologists study and which urban designers despair of. There's no there, there.
Favorite thing:
While the streets of this capital city bustle with the goings-on of government and big business, a subterranean entertainmet district thrives in underground Atlanta.
Fondest memory:
A marvelous mix of old and new, the 12 acre complex retains the ambience of late nineteenth century Atlanta with original brick and terra cotta facades and cobbelestone streets.
Favorite thing: It appears to be some kind of aerial garden. I don't really understand what the function of that large "screen" might be, unless there are solar power collectors embedded in the glass.
Favorite thing: There are some impressive buildings in Atlanta. The tallest skyscraper is the Bank of America tower, but who knows how long that will last?
Favorite thing: This is One Peachtree Center is downtown (the tall building on the left), just one example of the impressive architectural skyline of Atlanta.
