Midtown - Charlie Gs 11th St Pub: Transplanted Chicago Bears Fan Hang Out

Watching Da Bears!

On certain weeks I needed to get down to Atlanta for business on Sundays in 2011 because we had a training class to conduct first thing Monday morning. On my last week in town in late November, 2011, another co-worker from Chicago and myself headed over to Charlie G's 11th Street Pub to watch the Bears go down to defeat to the Oakland Raiders.

This is a spot in Atlanta where for every Bears game, Chicago fans who are either in town on business, (like me) or transplanted Chicagoans have a chance to put on their Bears gear and head on over for the game (on all TV's) and for some liquid and food refreshment.

I'm not one to inhabit many locals bars, but this was a fun afternoon. The food was fairly decent for bar type food. I had a large burger and we shared a plate of nachos along with a couple of Beers. Nice way to spend some time around a friendly and spirited Bears crowd.

Dress Code: Bears attire if watching a Bears game

Blake's During the Day.

This neighbourhood bar is right down the street from Outwrite Books and sort of across the street from Piedmont Park, hence the name. Great place to meet gay boys and celebrities visiting Atlanta.

Dress Code: No sneakers.

Its probably no surprise that Midtown is the middle part of the city- about halfway between downtown and the northern perimeter. Midtown is also more laid back than downtown or Buckhead, although it does have a nightlife scene of its own.

Crescent Street is a popular destination in Midtown. Anyone out for a pub crawl in Midtown would want to head here (or simply go over to Virginia Highlands, which is about 5 minutes away). Here are a couple of suggestions:

1150 - A nightclub frequented by the younger crowd. We didn't go in but from what we saw, and heard, this looked like the college age place to be. If you like loud music and long lines, give this one a shot.

Front Page News : This is a great all around place to go for food, drinks and live music. The downstairs area has a outdoor restaurant and indoor bar and the live music is played upstairs. The crowd is older than what you'll find in most places. Given that this is Atlanta, its still pretty young, but you'll actually find people in their 30's here. Its a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the bartenders are great band was as well.

Cosmopolitan Lounge : This place is advertised as being more upscale, but, other than charging a cover and attracting a crowd of people who think of themselves as upscale, its still a pretty casual place.

Shout: Shout is a new bar located on 14th Street near Colony Square. Its owners also own Twist, which is located in Buckhead. The place gets pretty crowded since its new and everyone wants to check it out, but I've heard mixed reviews.

Dress Code: In Atlanta, the general rule of thumb is that you can go anywhere in jeans.

We had a memorable Saturday night in Atlanta. A performance at this theatre was just a part of it.

After a full day of exploring Atlanta, it was enjoyable to leisurely walk from our B&B (in Midtown), to a nearby coffeeshop and then to the theatre. The show made us laugh - we enjoyed it. After it was finished, we walked to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Ticket prices were modest (less than $25 ea).

What You Expect from Professionals:
The cast gave a good performance for an original script. Good sets and costumes enhanced the performance.

Dress Code: Business casual recommended

Vision/Cosmo/Lava/1150/crescent room/twisted taco: various clubs in midtown

ok this covers a lot:

first, i will start with vision. vision is a very large club by just about any standards. friday night is hip-hop night and saturday night is basic techno/house music with a sprinkling of hip-hop, depending on the mood of the dj. if you get there after say 11:15 or so you'll probably be in line for some time unless you know someone. save yourself the money it costs to get in and go to http://visionatlanta.com and print off a free entry coupon. you must enter the back door for that. good music, good looking people but no red bull. if you are a good looking woman, it is no problem to get into vip, if you are a man like me, you had better know someone.

1150:
same people that run vision on saturday night run 1150 on friday night. same crowd as vision, better music. more deep house. big named djs play there (e.g. oaky, sasha, baby ann, icey). no idea how much it costs or what time to get there. never had to pay or wait but i'd say the same rules apply as for vision.

cosmopolitan/lava:
smaller clubs (two for the price of one) but just as good if not better. not the same supermodel crowd though as vision and 1150. never had to pay or wait so i can't tell you about that.

crescent room:
soon to reopen under new ownership so i can't tell you yet.

twisted taco:
more of a bar than a club although they do have a dj. i have never had a bad time there. something about the place makes it a great place to hang out. no cover, no dresscode but it gets *packed*

front page news:
outside area for sitting. some type of band typically plays. more of just a bar. quite popular but i like twisted taco much better.

Dress Code: vision, 1150: no jeans, no sneakers or as they say 'dress to impress'

cosmo/lava: jeans are allowed but i don't think sneakers are.

twisted taco & front page news: anything.

Midtown is nice and trendy if you're in that mood. The highlands are laid back - very relaxing... good adult, yet young, crowd. Buckhead is very frat/sorority fest slash ghetto fabulous.
The thing you really have to do though is head to the Cleimont Lounge on Ponce de Leon - it's a MUST see.

The Riviera seemed decent and clean. It was pretty smoky inside, but comfortable. It was very spacious, and the staff was friendly.

GREAT outdoor seating and close to clubs. The food is really good but pricey so be prepared to spend some cash.

Sorry but the only pictures I have are from Marja's birthday!
