Stone Mountain Park is only 16 miles outside of Atlanta in Stone Mountain, GA. This is the world's largest relief carving set in the world's largest mass of exposed granite. The carving depicts three heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and Lt. General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson.

Stone Mountain Park, located in De Kalb County east of Atlanta, has a multitude of activities, including camping and shopping, in addition to either hiking the mountain or making the climb by tram. There's also an antique car museum in the park, and fireworks every night during the summer months.

Although it's getting harder and harder to do so openly, many Southerners (white Southerners, at least) aren't shy about their nostalgia for the Confederacy (the side that lost the Civil War). Georgia's Stone Mountain Park, 16 miles east of town, is a fairly brazen celebration of the rebellion and its leaders, whose 90ft (27m) high likenesses have been carved out of the side of a granite monolith. The park has several lakes, picnic areas, a restored plantation and a skylift to the top of the 825ft (247m) peak.

Go to Stone Mountain Park - 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta. I know now that this is a huge attraction, but I didn't know anything about it when I planned my trip to Atlanta - we just kind of needed something to do during the day and went to check it out. This is a bizarre place - it is the world's largest mass of exposed concrete with the world's largest relief carving on it. Take the Mountain Top Skylift to see the carving close up and then check out the views from this huge rock! They have a great website at www.stonemountainpark.com

A: No, most of the shopping has moved out of Downtown, unfortunately. It's a fairly easy MARTA trip up to Buckhead or to Lenox Square though.
